Weirdest thing, I thought it was just coincidence, but I’ve paid attention and decided it’s not (the reaction). It started with bananas…scratchy throat, itchy inner ear, prickly tongue/lips. The same reaction I get to soy protein, which I have had a reaction to for mebbe 5 years now.
But then I noticed it with peaches, and just now with cherries! And probably with pineapple.
What gives? Internetting doesn’t seem to give me an answer that encompasses all of those.
Do any of these do it as well: almonds, apples, apricots, avocados, bananas, carrots, celery, cherries, chicory, coriander, fennel, fig, hazel nuts, kiwifruit, nectarines, parsley, parsnips, peaches, pears, peppers, plums, potatoes, prunes, soy, strawberries, wheat; Potential: walnuts
Those are all part of “birch pollen” people that have OAS, such as myself, tend to be allergic to a bunch of things from the same group.
When I was diagnosed with it a few years back I finally got to tell my mom that wasn’t ‘just being picky’, those things that I wouldn’t eat as a kid really did give me a sore throat.
I get that response from everything in the ‘ragweed’ list on this page:
Though I don’t have a particularly strong response to ragweed itself. Cantaloupe & honeydew are the worst for me, the whole inside of my mouth will start to itch. Bananas are OK if they’re about an hour from turning totally brown, but if there’s any green still on them forget it.
Does it only happen with fresh fruit? My son has Oral Allergy Syndrome and reacts to almost every fruit - but only fresh. He doesn’t react to cooked or canned or frozen fruit.

Well shoot, yeah that’s gotta be it. I remember reacting to kiwi a bit ago as well. Nothing with almond or other nuts yet; I’m drinking almond milk fine. I definitely have pollen allergies, do that fits.
Thanks for the replies. Guess there’s nothing really to do, I might mention it to my Dr at my next checkup.
There real downer is bananas. Not that I love them so much, they’re just so darn handy.
I started getting that with cherries maybe 5 years back and apples about 2 years ago. No reaction to cooked or juiced fruit, just fresh. Don’t seem to have any pollen allergies that I’ve noticed; did have allergy blood tests done a few years ago though and registered as ‘highly allergic’ to everything, including stuff I have no reaction at all to…
*You can’t drink, you can’t eat
Put down those grapes, you’re in deep
Your throat is tight, you can’t breathe
Another peach ain’t what you need
You like to think that you’re immune to the stuff, oh yeah
It’s closer to the truth that you must give it the boot
You know you’re gonna have to face it, you’re allergic to fruit

I have the reaction to kiwi fruit, but nothing else. Fortunately, kiwi is not that common and easy to avoid. It’s been years since I had kiwi. I’m going to try some soon and see if it still has the same effect.
