I recently heard from a friend of a girl that is allergic to water. I thought she was lying but she insists it’s the truth. Has anyone here heard of people being allergic to water? How can someon be allergic that 75% of their body is made up of? Isn’t water essential to…you know… live?
I don’t think you can be allergic to H2O, considering you need it to live. I’m assuming she had some kind of reaction to her drinking water one time or many times. Where is she from? There could have been some other contaminant in the water she’s allergic to. I’m no expert, just throwing in my $0.02.

I saw a 20/20 thing on this girl (maybe Dateline) anyhoo, she is allergic to water and can only take like five minute showers. Her skin blisters up painfull when she comes in contact with H20. She has a special outfit to wear outside in the rain and she lives somewhere in Britain. She also has a reaction to her own sweat and tears. I don’t know what causes it, but is sounds pretty sucky to me.
Try Heidi Falconer suffers from Aquagenic Urticaria
“Heidi is allergic to water. If its raining she just cant go out without thinking. It’s called Aquagenic Urticaria. Her mother, Wendy says Heidi was born with the rare allergy where one small drop of water can bring out blisters, rashes, and, in extreme cases alaphalactic shock which could lead to death.”
“Heidi Falconer is one of just 30 people in the world who suffer from this strange, and potentially deadly disorder”
“A special raincoat keeps her dry, and she always carries a doctor’s note and a shot of adrenaline in case of anaphylactic shock. Her diet consists of dry foods and she drinks only whole milk or orange juice, which, because of their chemical composition, bring her no harm. She can only shower once a week for 30 seconds and even that brings on blisters. And she’s allowed just one small shot of water when she brushes her teeth.”
“Even more troubling is that experts aren’t sure what causes this allergy. Doctor Gary Rachelefsky of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology says it’s usually the release of a chemical called histamine into the skin. But they don’t know why water, in this case would cause the release of histamine”
Eh, I don’t buy it. Milk and o.j are both essentially solids suspended in water - brain is on vacation, forget the chemical term right now (you know, even back in college, that word always slipped my mind. I think I must have had some childhood trauma involving suspended solids). Hell, due to pollution, rainwater, which apparently will kill Heidi Falconer, is also solids suspended in water. I’m just a humble holder of non-scientific degrees, but I don’t think tossing a few lumps of fat in water changes it chemical composition. Or are we supposed to believe that calcium or vitamin C have the ability to prevent an allergic reaction?
A kid in my 3rd grade class had this, or something like it.
I remember some children getting severly punished for squirting him with squirt guns. Anyway, whatever it was he had eventually killed him! No shit!
It sounds suspiciously like a psychosomatic response, if she was truly allergic to water, the water in foods, drinks, and her own body would kill her.
It also could be a reaction to water additives like chlorine or flouride. Though I’d think a good doctor would have investigated both of these.
Wow, that would suck. I’d have to separate my screen name to keep the all important j2 away from the water. It would look like water j2 or something.
