Almish

Jeannie, you have it just a bit reversed. The Mennonites were organized by Simonsz Menno (1496 - 1561). The Amish (or Old Order Amish) under the direction of Jakob Ammann in the late seventeenth century, broke with the Mennonites because they felt the Mennonites were not strict enough. Because they do share a lot of theology, they have tended to settle near each other, but the stricter, more conservative group is actually of more recent (comparatively) origin: the Amish.

Tom~

I’m going to be picky, but you really can’t say that the Amish speak Dutch. Suppose that you’re in France and that you see an building which has people coming out of it. You don’t speak French but you indicate by signs to a Frenchman that you want to know what that building is. The Frenchman says, “Une librairie.” You say, “O.K., I knew that it was a library.”

But it’s not. “Librairie” is the French word for “bookshop”. It’s the same way with “Pennsylvania Dutch.” Someone asked them what language they spoke and they said “Deutsch.” “Deutsch” is the German word for German. Dutch and German are distinguishable languages, and the Amish speak German.

Actually that should be Menno Simons(Simons is the generally accepted last name(though in his lifetime Menno spelled it about a hundred different ways,)(pick pick pick)

Other than that though, you were right. Though the Amish weren’t so much break aways from the Mennonite church as they were a separate sect in the rather disorganised Anabaptist movement.

Say, why don’t we see if there are any Amish among the Teeming Millions who could post a first hand response…

Hey, wait, that wouldn’t work, would it.

Never mind.

Been here so long he’s got to calling it Home.

That happened here in Minnesota as well. The reason they gave for not wanting the triangles wasn’t because of the shape, though. It was because they didn’t approve of the bright colors. Now they’re allowed to use a triangle, but instead of red/blaze orange, it’s white with a black border.

Scylla, you need to go out and buy Weird Al Yankovic’s CD “bad hair day”. The first song on it is “Amish Paradise” - it’s a parody of Gangsta’s Paradise. It’ll make you feel better.

Scylla:

Get a freaking life and mind your own business.

::

Califboomer:

Being shot at by people with guns who are tresspassing on my own property isn’t my own business?

I may have proved myself to be biased and ignorant on the subject of my local Amish, Brethren or whatever they are, but you are just a fucking moron.

Ah, the wit and wisdom of a troll…

Ask the Gay Guy!

Why is Califboomer still around?

He should have been kicked off ages ago…

Does that fact that he disagrees with me prove that I might have a point?

I mean, he is ALWAYS wrong.

Shucks, I don’t Hate the Amish, anymore. I don’t even know who they are, much less if my neighbors even are Amish.

It just might.

Although you probably want to be careful with that argument, after all, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

They sound like good environmentalists who don’t want to hurt mother earth.

They sound like good liberals who think all property belongs to the government.

  1. You don’t like diversity?
  2. and you’re paranoid?

What about tolerance?

::

Oh, and by the way–

Hate is not a family value.

CalifBoomer: No one cares what you think. Kindly stop messing up our tidy little message board.

And who said hate wasn’t a family value anyway? To look at all those “family values” people I just naturally assumed it was the main one.

Califboomer:

“They sound like good liberals who think all property belongs to the government.”

Liberals don’t think this. Socialists, dictators, and feudalists do. Get your facts straight.

“and you’re paranoid”

Yeah, I guess your right. That whole thing about their shooting at me was probably just their way of extending a friendly greeting. How foolish of me to misinterpret this.

“What about tolerance?”

Let them sneak into your house with firearms and start shooting up the place. Tell me how tolerant I should be again, why don’t you?

“Hate is not a family value.”

Sure it is. The entire history of the human race shows us dividing into exclusive groups based on common heritage (read family) and hating anybody outside that group.

I trust I don’t need to show examples.

tomndebb-- That’s what I get for posting stuff without looking it up. I stand corrected.

I dunno. You just reversed the names. No biggie.
As Nu Vo Da Da noted, there were glitches with my info, too.

Don’t worry.

I have no idea what I’m talking about. Any other errors are sure to appear microscopic compared to the ignorance I’ve demonstrated.

My goodness, quite the flagellation party we’ve got going here…

But I’m a non-conformist, so I’d just like to point out that I have never posted anything less than completely factual and true.

Well, except for maybe that last statement.

Profanity is the crutch of the inarticulate mother-fucker.
