I am a woman of convictions. I’ve admitted on this board that I love 'N Sync, and I lived through it. I’ve admitted that I sit at work and cry and I lived through it. I’ve admitted that I don’t read science fiction and I lived through it. I also don’t like The English Patient.
But now, as inpsired by Tars Tarkas’ current Star Wars pit thread, I’m going to make the greatest admission of all.
I really liked the Phantom Menace.
There. I said it. I saw it twice in the theatres. Was it the greatest movie ever? No way. Was it fun and escapist and a blast to watch? You bet. Darth Maul, come on. Fantastic. No, I did not like Jar Jar Binks. Does he deserve a sort of abuse reserved only for heroin addicted child molesters with bad breath? no. Jake Lloyd was cute as a button. AS A BUTTON, I won’t hear different.
I thought it was a good movie. I had fun. It wasn’t until it became ‘cool’ to hate it that I realized everyone around me started hating it. But I won’t buy into what the cool kids say.
I liked Phantom Menace, and I’m excited for the next one.
I liked it, too. Peta Tzunami and I saw it in theaters 12 times. I’m still an avid collector of SW gear. I own the VHS of Episode I, and I’ve got the DVD on pre-order.
Oh, I liked it. I saw it three times in the theaters, and bought the video on the first day of release, and I’m sure I’ll buy the DVD too. It certainly had it moments (none of which involved Jar Jar, who, by the way, is most clearly evil and not AT ALL harmless).
At the same time, I confess I like making fun of it, too. I spent a day making .wav files that combined Mace Windu lines with lines from Pulp Fiction, and I giggled like a schoolgirl each time I listened to them.
Miller, I’m trumping your geekiness with: I dressed up like Amidala for Halloween, and sometimes I sit around the house wearing the wig and the big honking fake jewelry, and making royal declarations in a kind but gentle way to the cat (who does not, incidentally, respond).
I am right there with you. I loved Episode 1. I bought the VHS tape right when it came out and I saw it in the theatre on opening day. I only saw in the theatre 6 times, so I can’t brag as much as phil and Petra. But, I did drive down to LA so I could see it in digital format. (For the record, I didn’t care for it as much in digital format, I agree with Ebert’s opinion that watching movies on film and on TV are different experiences for more reasons than just the size of the screen. The flicker that a projector causes really has an effect. I need to read more McCluhan, I think he talks about similar things when he discusses hot and cold media, or somesuch. … anyway.)
I don’t have a DVD player, so I doubt I will be getting the DVD, atleast until I have a player. But, I am somewhat dissappointed that they are releasing it on DVD. I was looking forward to seeing it on the big screen once again. I think the timing of the DVD release says they are not going to release the movie to theatres before the new one comes out, like they did with the films in the first trilogy.
To sum it up. I loved Episode 1. It had lots of jedi ass kicking, some fun jokes (Although, I am glad to hear Lucas had some help with the latest script, he needs some more polished humor in there.), and a great new beginning to the story I loved already.
Oh sure it was maudlin! Sure it was overdone! Who cares! It was great cinema and I loved it even more because it was the only movie I saw in the theater for a whole year.
I even liked Leonardo DiCaprio and I am a woman over the age of 35. (Oh OK, so I wanted to mother him. Shoot me.)
[tough girl face on]But Pulp Fiction is one of my favorite movies of all time. [tough girl face off]
However, I will probably be forced to see The Princess Diaries  in the near future, being the mother of a 6-year-old princess, y’know.
I liked it, jarbaby. Of course, it does help that when I saw it it was right after my baccalaureate dinner. Being with friends makes anything better. And I admit it…I liked Jar-Jar. So there.
I didn’t necessarily love Phantom Menace, but I bought the book by Terry Brooks. I thought it would help me understand some of the things that confused me, and would go into more depth. It didn’t, though. It was pretty much a novelization of the screenplay.
My girlfriend went at 12:01 or whenever you had to go to be the first person at the first showing. When the Star Wars logo came up at the beginning, she burst into tears.
:o I liked Star Wars too. AND Titanic. Now I’m feeling uncool again…
…but you have to admit that the racing scene in SW kicked ass and that Queen Amidala’s costumes and hair were awesome. You know you loved them
I liked Phantom Menace too. I am looking forward to the next two. I also bought it on video when it came out and have watched it a few times since.
It was about time someone made a good sci fi film with lots of nice space battles and lasers and stuff. It is great, mindless escapism. Hopefully there will be lots more films like this to come (not just the two sequels
I’ve only seen it once, but I liked it. I could have done without Jar Jar, though. And it was weird because I know what’s going to happen to little Annikin…no wait…Anikin…or is it Anakin?..well, you know who I mean. So it’s not like I went out of there wondering if he’d turn evil.
And I am very much looking forward to Episode 2.
(How do you spell that guy’s name anyway?)
