Wow. To expound a little on what was touched on by Captain Amazing regarding the Mexican-American war.
Today we don’t consider Mexico to be a great military power, but there was a time when the US went to war with them to secure land from Texas to California. Now we know Mexico lost this war, we got the SW US (including New Mexico) and California.
Now you say the US military is doing nothing to protect you. If there was no US military, don’t you think Mexico might like to have that land back?? What would stop Mexico from just coming on in and taking it back?? Liberal arts majors with headbands and guitars? I’d put money on the Mexican army.
Now this sounds silly, doesn’t it? Why, Mexico would never do that to us! We are the United States! No, really we are just a chunk of land with people living here. If we have no means of protecting our land, it wouldn’t take much for somebody else to live here. Especially somebody who has probably not forgotten that it was once their dirt you are perched on.
But we have treaties with other countries, they’d bail us out! Maybe, but what if they needed a favor and all we could send was good wishes?? Still think that’s gonna save your bacon?
I totally agree that you come across as somebody who is more put out that your sister has signed on with “the other side” and is getting here education “paid for” by the Military-Industrial complex or whatever that bogeyman is.
So maybe you can’t see the value of a military (and remember, even liberal administrations still have to use it), but there are plenty of reasons to have it.
(And I totally don’t think Mexico would invade the US if tomorrow we declared that we no longer had a military. They couldn’t whip the dozens of other nations who would vie for the prize.)
