One of the people I complained about took another look at the thread in question (1000th post) and did the adult thing - thought about it, thought about behavior in context, apologized, we’re making nice.
What possible motivation do the rest of you have for your circle jerk/dogpile protection of your almighty SDMB turf? Could it possibly occur to any of you that perhaps if one of the people with an initial comment I found out of line could rethink it and retract that you could take the time to do the same? This is the bully sycophant pack mentality I’ve been complaining about.
It takes no balls whatever to take a potshot and run on a freakin’ anonymous message board for fuck’s sake. This is why I usually stay out of the Pit; not because I’m not “tough enough” or “thick skinned” but because some of you Dopers have confused Don Rickles’ one-liner rejects with wit and rational argument.
In theory you all feel the need to take random third party cracks at me because I was violating a rule (again, in theory) meant to conserve SDMB resources! Not only are you showing yourselves to be boorish and unfunny, you’re suggesting you also have zero sense of irony.
First, as Hal stated it doesn’t appear I violated the law.
Second, this is the only place on the boards where discussing if a law is good or not is supposed to happen to my understanding. If you want to explain *why * you think I violated that law and stick around to discuss it, let’s do that. If not, you’re just wanking. And wanking, I might add, in defense of a rule meant to keep people from wanking!
Third, people who cheer on the Man and sadistically sic the Man on people while adulating the Man because they think the the law might be getting violated most certainly are toadies. Absolutely. If the skin fits, wear it.
Fourth, if you’re going to attempt BEV (or whatever they’re calling it in linguistics classes these days), you could at least get it right.
First off, there are plenty of questions and critiques of board moderation in About This Message Board, which is where I’d always assumed they belonged (unless, of course, the purpose was specifically to pit a rule, practice or Mod). For example, the front page of ATMB includes
this one asking where a thread disappeared to
this one asking why a thread was closed (and ended in a general trainwreck)
this one asking why someone was banned
and this one asking why a thread was closed
in addition to numerous other questions about rules & regulations.
Secondly, you could have focused your 1,000th post OP more on your “Is this an average first-year post count?” question if that’s what you wanted everyone else to pay attention to. Maybe calling it “Doper Posting Habits” and putting it in IMHO (where surveys go).
Thirdly, SAYING THAT YOU THINK PITTERS ARE A WASTE OF BANDWITH IN THE PIT is obviously going to get at least a few insults thrown back at you. Not to mention that by avoiding the Pit (because really, what could be worthwhile down there?) you’re missing out on some great threads, including rivitting stories about horrible blimps, crazy Southern grandmothers, incompetent machine shop supervisors and sundry others. But I wouldn’t want you to sully yourself.
Finally, returning to your original complaint, you could’ve contacted a Mod and pointed out that you did have a valid question about posting habits. Like Hal, SkipMagic may have missed that tree for the forest.
Oh, and on preview, the Pit is obviously not the place for rational arguement, although sometimes it does sneak up on us by surprise.
A number of months ago when I questioned a mod decision I was told doing that belonged in the Pit, and it was specifically suggested I do that there, which I did. I thought this time I’d just save the middle step.
It’s clear that what happens then is that a subset of Dopers who hang out in the Pit waiting for someone to complain will inevitably feel their online religion was violated and attack the poster directly instead of dealing with the substance of the dispute, or, even better in most cases, butting out.
Anyone who complains about random third party assholes hijacking their attempt to argue their point in the forum assigned with personal insults and one liners is then called “thin skinned.” This happens over and over again. It is sycophantic, it is pack mentaility and it most certainly is a much larger waste of bandwidth than just about anything else.
Now, if your complaint is that my thread could have been titled differently, suggest that. Don’t make superior attitude “haha lock the thread” jokes like one of Jabba the Hutt’s pets. And if the thread belongs in IMHO because it’s considered a survey, it can be moved there without snark and without a Peanut Gallery.

Now I understand that the forum is called Mundane Pointless Stuff I Must Share, and I also understand that your thread was just posted in that tradition, but as other posters have pointed out, there actually is a policy against the thread you started. Granted you did ask a question in the OP, but at the end of the day, it was just a post-count party.
Did Hal, Lute and I really have to post our comments in that thread? No. Were they superfluous and somewhat sarcastic? Sure. Were they “assholish?” Not really. At least I didn’t post mine with mean intent. If you took my comments in that thread to be offensive, I apologize.

I was gonna come in here and make a few snide and sarcastic remarks, although not directed to the OP personally, but the topic of the rant. I even had a zinger all set to go at around 6:30 but couldn’t post it because my PC kept timing out at work. Now it seems you all have it hashed out, misunderstandings were cleared up, and drinks are even being offered.

Check my history; over 90% of my posts are in the fact-based boards. A few in Cafe Society, one previous Pit incident when I didn’t even want to be there. Almost nothing in IMHO or MPS… I don’t hang out there, I don’t know all the rules offhand (which is not to say, once again, that I think I violated them this time).
If you want to have discourse, direct people where they need to go and enagage them civily. If you want to have a circle jerk clique and play King of the Boards, just keep being dicks about it.
You started this because you took some good-natured joking and had an emotional meltdown over it. I’d say that makes you “thin-skinned.” You aren’t “tough enough” to admit that you’re wrong, even when it’s transparent, and everyone else disagrees with you (which, if you were rational, would be a signal to at very least stop and reevaluate.)
You’re also a whiny little drama queen. To make this much fuss over nothing - I’m guessing you don’t have much else to do these days. Very sad, really.

I don’t consider replying to a post of that sort, in which I thanked the Doper community for enlightening me a bout a lot of things over the past year, with a mocking lickspittle anticpation of the thread being as “good natured.”
Read further up in the thread; your contention that no one agrees with me is demonstrably incorrect. I imagine there are quite a few Dopers like myself who normally don’t read Pit threads because they do think it’s a waste of time who would agree with me; this is hardly a radom sample. Not that a minority opinion being de facto wrong was ever a rational way of arguing to begin with.

Heh. Yknow if you read the entirety of this this thread, you’ll see that’s also factually incorrect. I mistakenly thought UncleBob was still a mod and retracted my comments which were based upon that.
