That’s okay. Fleas are about 10000x less scary than bedbugs. We don’t have any clear way we could have gotten bedbugs, but our retarded cat has recently decided she’s an Outdoor! Kitty! so now my money is on fleas. I haven’t seen any blood trails or other signs, and the Highly Stupid Cat sleeps on all the beds…
I’ll get her a flea collar and talk about flea treatments with the vet.
We don’t have a dog, just the cat and two kids. They don’t have fleas.
I got all those flea bites from one encounter with an evidently flea-bitten dog who was not my own, by the way. (Well, perhaps they were also living in that couch.) Had nothing to do with my own animals and everything to do with somebody else’s house.
True. All cats are dumb. Ours, though, is so dumb she doesn’t know to come inside during a rainstorm, and runs head-first into walls.
Our former housemate’s assessment was dumb as toast.
If you suspect fleas, I would strongly recommend using Frontline or Advantage on your cat. You can get Advantage from Amazon. It’s more expensive than a flea collar but much more effective and also safer for your cat. (I personally do not use flea collars on cats.)
According to my best friend, who’s a veterinarian, 90% of fleas are in the environment, so make sure you are vacuuming regularly and throwing the vacuum bags out afterwards. I use the vacuum attachment and take it over the baseboards, over the upholstered furniture, and along the edges of my futon. (My cat spends about 20 minutes outside every day on a leash and we do have fleas in this area, so I try to keep flea occupations down to a minimum by regular vacuuming plus Advantage.)
I was having “conga lines” of red raised itchy lumps on my sides, right about at the bra line there, and panicked over the idea of bedbugs or scabies. However, it turned out that I was sleeping on a wrinkle in my sheets and I was getting “pressure hives” as a result. The wrinkle line caused a trail of hive spots in a row. If they’re hives, they’ll raise up in a flat welt and itch for a day or two, and then vanish.
Please don’t put a flea collar on your cat. They don’t work anywhere on the pet except the 2 inches around the neck, and especially for cats, they’re toxic. Even if your kitty is used to a collar, the flea ones aren’t breakaway, and there’s risk of a cat getting caught on something - especially outside - because they like to slink through small spaces where a collar could get snagged.
A topical veterinarian-dispensed medication is far safer (for your kids, too, really). Revolution, Advantage, or Frontline specifically labeled for cats are my recommendations. The stuff you get in the pet aisle at the grocery store, or big box retailers is not recommended (Hartz, Sentry, BioSpot, Sergeants - products containing pyrethrins or permethrin or other types of pyrethroids are lethal to cats, even though some companies still market these for cats with pictures of cats on the package, I’ve seen the effects these have on cats and some dogs first hand. It’s ugly and awful.) Please make sure to be careful what products you use.
I don’t mean to be preachy, I just want anyone who reads this to be aware. Cats are especially sensitive to pyrethroids and so many well-meaning people buy the products containing them, not knowing the possible toxicity, and after all, there’s a picture of a cat on the product. I’m a little bitter that it’s so hard to get the products pulled. It’s just bad stuff, and I’ve seen a couple dogs have issues with it, too, just not lethal issues.
Anyway, I kinda hope the problem’s fleas (if anything), they are easier to get rid of!
Hello,
I have had the same symptoms for the past two weeks (only me bit in household, bit along bra and panty line at night) and am starting to look for causes. New bites nightly in different places, they resolve in a day or two since I’m not covered in them. It’s not fleas (dogs are on RX monthly), no signs of bedbugs, I don’t usually get mosquito bites - others seem more tasty, no camping or other signs of chiggers. Generally I don’t show much allergic reaction so I doubt hives.
I wondered about little spiders or mites? What did your problem end up being?
Thx
