I have Gmail, so what’s the downside of clicking my okay on such emails - from companies I often get messages from?

I may have done so once in my life.

Did you mean ‘Always display images’? The downside is that when you open the mail, the images will be automatically downloaded, and that might potentially inform a spammer (if the mail is spam) that this is an active email address. Other than that, there’s no downside, AFAIK. If it’s a source you trust, you can set ‘Always download’ on, and not have to manually download the images for each email.
