I’ve really been enjoying the curling this year. I used to watch it kind of as a goof, but after I found out how it works, I actually seek it out during the Olympics.
I’d kinda like to try it myself (I live in the SF Bay Area, and our local rink has “learn to curl” lessons and an actual league) but not only is there no way I’d be able to get into that position they use to throw the stones, but I’m scared of falling over backward and cracking my head. I’m not the most dextrous of individuals.
For people with mobility issues, there is a delivery stick that rests on the stone’s handle and lets a player deliver it like the push sticks in shuffleboard. Your local club should have one, but you might check in advance.
If anyone ever wondered why sports, even oddball ones, often have such a hard-on for getting into the Olympics - think about how long competitive ballroom dancing has been trying - here you go. Curling’s popularity has skyrocketed due to its inclusion in the Olympics.
I was thinking more of attempts to replicate curling, but without the ice and with wheels under the stones:
I was just down in the seaport district last night and saw some people playing this. I think it’s missing a lot of the skill and strategy of the real thing, but still looked like fun.
