Am I horribly, horribly insane re: South Parks writer’s attitude?

[hank hill]So are you Chinese or Japanese?[/hank hill]

I’m still not quite reading you. You do know that South Park is a crude and deliberately offensive comedy cartoon for adults and not a social treatise, right?

Hmm. Well, I think you would have to pull tons of examples from both sides, to show that they’re attacking “genuine” concerns on the right but “straw men” on the left. As a lefty, I think they’ve been pretty hilariously on-target (and simultaneously broadly stereotypical in their depictions) in their attacks on both sides.

I think your “heartland vs. coasts” notion is neither here nor there. Just replace “coasts” with “stereotype of Hollywood liberal elite”, though and I think you’re on target.

And while South Park is itself a social satire (just an incredibly haphazard one), one of its basic techniques is to poke fun at all the highfalutin craziness radicals on both sides get into. But they still need that craziness, and the vapid actions of Hollywood celebrities and other pop culture mania. Just because they rip it to shreds all the time doesn’t mean they don’t need it or love it. That would be like concluding that the National Enquirer hates Michael Jackson–after all, look at all the horrible things they say about him!–when, really, they couldn’t exist without him and his ilk.

This forum is Cafe Society, for discussion about arts and entertainment. If you want to discuss “South Park,” that’s fair game, go right ahead. If you want to discuss politics – whether there is a liberal bias to the media, or whether South Park plays into that bias (or against it, I’m not sure) – that belongs in the GREAT DEBATES FORUM. I grant you, there’s sometimes a fine line between entertainment and politics, but this discussion doesn’t seem to be about the entertainment/art but about the politics.

If you want to make jokes, go to MPSIMS, I suppose.

OK, it also seems that this thread is pretty much redundant to the thread started yesterday…as per Scott’s link in the OP. Hence, this one is closed.

Nice responses, thanks. I have infact already realized my mistake, and posted a simplified form of this in Mpism:

I hear all the time about “The Liberal Media”, but how about in entertainment
