I hear all the time about “The Liberal Media”, but how about in entertainment?
I read a friends newspapers, and he gets a paper that containts the comic strip “Mallard Phillmore.” It contains the most ridiculous stereotypes and demonizations of liberals. I am horrified by it, but I can not help but sneak a peak every time I am at his house. I get the feeling the underlying message about pop-culture found between the lines is:
“At the end of the day, I want to sit down and watch brain numbing tv. I am angry that I see social issue discussed everywhere, and I am disgusted by the fact that they are produced by people who are liberal, not people who are socially conservative.”
I also feel I see this viewpoint in South Park, especially the latest one. In my mind, visibility of various groups on tv is a good thing, and I figured that the writers would see that, but instead they seem to say, "You can be as weird as you want to be, you just have to accept that we don’t like you, and we will mock your view point.
Oh, and I know that everyone says "They try to mock both sides, but I am just not seeing it.
You might recall I tried to start threads on this topic in Cafe Society, but I cut my losses and am trying it here.
From the horrible idea I had to put a political discussion in Cafe Society:
Ok, I can not remember any examples besides the one about election recounts, and the latest one, but I will try and show examples of straw men arguments in SP from TV tome. I fully realize that without having seen the episode personally, it doesn’t show me the whole picture, but this concerns me.
Trapper Keeper
The kindergarten election just goes on and on. That is how I felt about the real election, but it does not reflect reality. Here, it is made to look like recounts are about not admitting you lost.
The Death Camp of Tolerance
A gay teacher, Mr. Slave becomes the new teacher. He appears to be along the lines that having a gay teacher will lead to “moral decadence” Mr. Garrison is given his “Courageous Teacher” award and his attempt to shock the very tolerant crowd doesn’t work. Irked at their tolerance of his behavior, he reminds them all that tolerance and acceptance are two different things; you can tolerate something and still be pissed off about it. Red Hot Catholic Love
This one clearly show it is bad for priests to molest kids. Yay! Good message. However, it also says that getting “under god” removed from the declaration of independence is a bad thing. feh. I have seen this one. It end with people deciding: “After all, without religion in their lives they’ll just go around spewing a bunch of crap out of their mouths.”
In conclusion:
feh.
P.S. The comic strips aren’t working for me anymore and king syndicate isn’t letting me link either. Here is an archive of strips, though it will probably be of more use to his fans than his enemies. the comics I had are no longer available on the page below. They had a bizarre looking Barbra Streisand calling blue states idiots, Dan Rather with a Smirk, talking about blue states, and February 25 05 :
I can understand where people feel the need to judge the quality of the news based upon their own political leanings. Well, not really but I won’t begrudge them the right.
Judging your entertainment by your political leanings is a step too far. If you don’t like something, that’s fine. Don’t go throwing politics into it.
And by the by, the writers of South Park do actually hit both sides fairly consistently. You should actually watch the show on a regular basis before you make up your mind.
About now. :smack: Argh, I get it. No one thinks that right wingers trying to say “television is all left wing, and is must be stopped”, is a big problem that needs to be addressed. Well, except for one or two on this tread, and one the south park thread, which I feft, because I felt I was getting off topic. I should have stayed. :smack:
More accurately, you’ve addressed it in such a clumsy, hamfisted, squirrel-minded manner that no-one is taking you seriously, preferring instead to wait for the more entertaining outrages of Reeder’s next Bush-bash.
Actually, I think that anyone trying to attribute political motives to an entertainment medium needs psychological assistance. Then again, I’m an old crank.
I was under the opinion that many entertainer hold political opinions, that they express in their work, such as the recent insulting of transgendered people in the most recent episode of South Park. I now realize I am wrong. All television shows are written by robots. For an example of a robot written show, see,“Everyone loves Raymond” I will now see a psychoanalist.
