Am I wasting my money on XBox Live?

I don’t play games online. I just don’t. I prefer to play one-player games or sports games against friends who can just come over. I have Netflix on my computer. Are occasional DLC’s for the few games I own worth the money XBox Live costs? What else is it good for?

Let me ask the question a different way:

Why do you pay for XBox Live? Because it’s not required to get any DLC that I’m aware of. (A very very small number of demos and possibly other stuff start out as “Gold Exclusives” but that’s only a temporary state anyway.).

The point of Xbox Live Gold Membership (which I -assume- is what we’re talking about here, since Silver is Free and it is therefore impossible to waste money on it.) is to play games online. There are a few other quirks and bells and whistles, but fundamentally, that’s what it’s for. If you’re not doing that, I wonder why you’re paying for it.

Sounds like you don’t need a Gold Membership on XBox Live. If you don’t play online, don’t need it for Netflix, don’t buy movies on demand, it seems like you aren’t getting much for your Gold membership.

You should be able to buy DLC for your games using the Free XBL Silver membership as well.

Hmm. I didn’t even know all that. Suppose I’ll drop it then. I actually haven’t even paid them anything; got a 1-year membership card for Xmas.

Perhaps you should look into playing games online while you have the service. After all, what better way to determine if you want to retain it or not?

I concur with LOUNE - if you’ve already essentially PAID for the service (Or rather, someone else has already paid for it for you) then for heaven’s sake, at least get out there and PLAY with it. What you’re doing right now is the equivalent of accepting someone’s gift of, say, a racing game, putting it on your shelf, and saying, “I don’t like racing games” and letting it collect dust.

I bet you own SOME sort of game that has a online multiplayer. And with luck, you have someone in your friends list who has it too. Bingo. Time to play some Castle Crashers!

Fair enough.

Don’t suppose they ever remade SW:Battlefront for 360?

I’d be slacking if I didn’t also tell you that there’s a Friends list for Dopers. Just view the friends of that Gamertag and you’ll see the Dopers that are friends of that Gamertag and if they’re online/what they’re playing.

Drop me a message if you’re interested.

if you like sports games, get on there and play some sports games. I like being able to talk to people while I play games with them. Also, for me at least since I live so far away from most of my friends, I can see a buddy online and start up a chat with him even if I’m playing a different game. Good way of catching up and whatnot.

Oh yea, and you should download the Blur demo, it’s like mario kart meets serious racing, and it’s fantastic. Since you have XBL Gold for the time anyway, may as well have some fun with it
