Amazing found collection of 1950s/60s street photos

Great pictures. Glad someone saved them from the storage place.

They said a lot of it was undeveloped. I understand why. Film was cheap. Developing was so darn expensive.

I had a drawer full of undeveloped film that I took as a teen. Tried developing some of it about 8 years ago. They didn’t come out well at all. The colors had shifted, there were odd blotches. The film had deteriorated a lot in 25 years. I guess B&W film doesn’t go bad like color.

If you love street photography, you should check out the film Bill Cunningham: New York, about a man who has dedicated his life to photographing fashion on the streets of New York City. I don’t give a damn about fashion, but this is a great movie and he has a wonderful sense of composition.

Wasn’t that funny? I especially liked this one.

Yup, thanks, Shakester.

How I wish there were captions. There’s one with streets filled with people who all seem to be looking in one direction. I wonder what that’s about.

There seems to be something fascinating in each one. I’ve changed my mind several times. “My favorites are the kids. No my favorites are the ladies in fur stoles and collars. The best ones have windows in them. Men with hats win! Self portraits, definitely the self portraits…”

Very glad you shared these today. Thank you.

Absolutely stunning! The clarity of the composition makes my head swim, thanks so much for sharing these.

Even though I grew up well across the country, I kept thinking I might recognize someone.

Thank you. I feel like I just spent an hour . . . well, somewhere else.

Nice link. I love comparing photos taken from the exact same viewpoint years apart. Does anyone know of any sites that specialise in that kind of thing?

It looks like the photos from the OP’s blog site have been removed. :frowning:
Does anyone know what happened, or better yet where they can be found?

Probably a copyright violation, no?

Anyway, most of those photos are on the website dedicated to her work:

Okay, thank you!

There is a quatrain in Grey’s Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard that
has stayed with me and seems appropriate here:

    *For many an unseen gem
    the caves of ocean bear;
full many a flower is born to blush unseen
and waste its sweetness on the desert air.*
