This video almost brought tears to my eyes. The sheer, unencumbered joy and amazement can be felt through this woman’s facial and body language. It really is something.
It is fantastic but one thing I don’t understand:
at the beginning the nurse says “Can you hear me?” and the girl has her hands over her eyes and nods yes.
How did the girl know what “Can you hear me” would mean? She would have only used lip reading and sign language up to now no? She would have a vocabulary same as everyone but she wouldn’t know what the words actually sounded like when delivered in an aural form.
Thread from earlier today.
Hmm. Well, I was never commenting on anything specific as to whether she was completely or partially deaf, I was merely commenting on the seeming genuine nature of the video. It really does seem to be someone who is emotionally overwhelmed.
Yeah that is clearly genuine and her happiness is infectious. It’s just that the headline of the article says:
Sarah Churman, Deaf Woman, Hears Herself For First Time
which is untrue. It’s not a criticism of her just of the newspaper (Huff Post) and makes you think about their standards
No doubt. I’m at work and can’t look at the article/video anyway, so I can’t comment one way or the other. But I thought you might be interested to know there was a General Questions thread about the same video.
Totally. I just think you might find the impact of the video to be a little less if it was labeled “somewhat hard of hearing woman experiences improvement.”
This one’s a bit better IMHO.
Yeah I really like those baby cochlear implant videos. That’s what I came in here to mention.
Did you notice that this woman’s youtube video links directly to another one entitled “I’VE GOT THE WEIRDEST BONER RIGHT NOW” with three topless Asian chicks dancing with the arm braces that people with cerebral palsy use? And there’s a bunch of other weird dancing and stuff after that. It’s a bit like cirque du soleil with medical equipment.
Moving thread from IMHO to MPSIMS.
