Yes, that makes a lot of sense as a timeline for the series.
Thinking ahead, if the series is a big success and they want to have more seasons, it’s interesting also to speculate how they could continue the story into the 3rd Age. Arnor vs. Angmar? Witch-king progressing from human to wraith? Stories of the Rangers after the fall of Arnor? Interspersed with cozy scenes of the beginnings of the Shire, And climaxing with the finding of the Ring by Smeagol.
This hits at the core of what I haven’t liked about the series. Galadriel is already thousands of years old at this point, has led her people across the grinding ice, is known for her innate ability to see into the minds of others, and for much of her time in Beleriand had Melian the Maia for a mentor. Seems to me that Galadriel should already be who we see from the Third Age, minus maybe that spark of wisdom that gave her the strength to reject the offer of the Ring.
Spoilers dude! You just ruined season five for me.
Time for a question I think I know the answer to. When Tolkien refers to “black” or “dark”, his meaning is leaning towards the evil side rather than skin color, correct? With all the hoopla about having black actors I guess pretty much all the characters in Tolkien’s world were white?
Re spoilers: since the vote came out in favor of spoilers, unless there are strong objections before the next episode drops, I’m going to use my mod privilege to assert that the rule for this thread will be:
Post as soon as you want to, but spoilery info about the latest episode should be in spoiler tags if posted less than 24 hours after the episode drops.
I think focusing on what you think is the timeline in terms of Second Age and Third Age and how long each one purportedly lasted is not going to get you anywhere. This is an original story based on Tolkien’s setting. That’s all. Trying to fit it into some kind of perceived “canon” is going to be a frustrating and fruitless experience that will neither increase enjoyment nor form a valid basis for judging the quality of this particular story. So my suggestion would be just to forget what you know about the Second Age, given that the story hasn’t actually referred to it.
The Dark Elves were not referring to Evil or Good or skin color. It was referring to them never traveling towards the Light or at least never seeing it. The Elves of Mirkwood were all Moriquendi. The Elves of Darkness.
The Moriquendi consisted of the Avari, The Nandor & The Sindar.
The Avari being those who refused the call to travel to the West. Those that later wandered west mixed with the Nandor to become the Silvan Elves or Wood Elves. Many of the Avari were probably corrupted by Morgoth to be the origins of the Orcs.
The Sindar being those that started on the Journey to the West but then stopped. Many of the Elves of Lothlorien were Sindar or Grey Elves. Thranduil and Legolas were Sindar that led Wood Elves. Círdan was Sindar.
Finally were the Nandor or Green Elves. They were basically Teleri Elves that did not complete the Journey to the West. They made up the bulk of the Elves of Lorien and Mirkwood.
The Elves of the Light or Calaquendi were the 3 groups that traveled west on the Great Journey and crossed the seas to Valinor to see the light of the Two Trees.
These were the Vanyar, Noldor and those Teleri that completed the journey.
The Vanyar were the smallest group of Elves. They barely come into the tales at all. They were noted for the blond hair. They lived closest to the Trees in Valinor.
The Noldor were the great knowledge seekers. Better at crafting than even the Dwarves. They are the most notable Elves in the history for both good and bad. Finwë’s oldest son Fëanor was the greatest in power and crafted both the Silmarils and Palantiri. Celebrimbor the Ring Smith is his Grandson.
The second wife of Finwë was Indis, close relative (probably niece) of Ingwë, the high King of the Vanyar. She was the mother of Fingolfin and Finarfin (also Findis & Irimë.) From Finarfin we get Galadriel (and her Golden Hair) and Finrod Felagund who Galadriel is mourning in the Rings of Power show. Gil-galad is Galadriel’s great nephew.
Teleri were the largest host and beloved of the Maia Ossë. They were the great mariners and shipwrights of the Elves of the Light.
