Amazon Lord of the Rings series; The Rings of Power

The cake slice is an anniversary on the board, the full cake is a birthday.

Elendil said to Isildur something like “there is nothing for us on the western side of Numenor any more!” I suppose I could go through and find the exact wording, but I think that’s pretty close. I had no idea what he was talking about.

I think you forgot about when Galadriel went to Hoth and murdered a Wampa.

The impression I got is that the culture of west Numenor is more elf-friendly than the capital and, as such, it’s politically unpopular and there are fewer opportunities for advancement there. Like living in the South immediately after the end of the Civil War, or being a Catholic in England in the 18th century.

Do we know that they’re Noldor, and not Sindar (which is not exactly the same as Sylvan elves)?

You’re right, I totally forgot about that. :slightly_smiling_face: That’s a bit more like a warrior-elf.

It seems like since Galadriel jumped ship, everything that has happened in her story was by chance rather than design. She lucks onto the raft, raft sinks and she ends up with a king, found by ship that happens to have a captain that’s elf friendly, said captain can take her to a place that has all kinds of info she needs. All with no planning on her part.

Happy Birthday, @What_Exit! What are you, pushing 80 now? You don’t look a day over 65.

Not a dude.

Well I’ve tried - 3 episodes and it’s not for me. I was trying to explain it and I guess the closest is when I’m expecting to enjoy a certain piece of music. I’m anticipating rumbling bass notes or changes in tempo and what I wind up hearing is “almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea”. The notes stumble, or don’t exist, or are half a step too high. It’s just off.

Maybe I’ll wander back to it later on and see if it finds its footing.

Just logging my entries for the character-prediction pool. What’s the prize, by the way?

The Stranger: Gandalf. His arrival – in both manner and time-frame - is non-canonical, but I can deal with it.
Haldar: will turn out to be heroic in some fashion but does not correlate to any canonical character.
Adar: Sauron.

Yeah, to me they missed the point of that name, which elegantly combines something beautiful and exotic Sam encountered on his travels with traditional Hobbit naming practices. It’s like they had a big list of hobbit names and grabbed one they liked, and then nick-named the character to give it a bit of a twist, not realising that it was then the same as a dwarf name. So it’s a bit messy, but it is still just a minor thing for me. I can’t hear ‘nori’ without thinking of the Japanese seaweed anyway, so I’m trying not to think about it too hard.

Same. But that seems suitable for snail-eating proto-hobbits.

Is everyone on Arda a dick? This show has given us no one whom we can really root for.

  • Commander Galadriel - A dick who causes her own troops to mutiny.
  • Gil-galad - “Peace in our time!” King Dick.
  • Elrond - Knows the king is a dick yet goes along with him anyway.
  • Harfoots - Short dicks who leave behind those who can’t keep up.
  • Númenor - An entire island of dicks (but that’s canon).

The jury’s still out on Elendil, but the way he treats his daughter shows some tendency to dickery.

Arondir hasn’t displayed any particular dickery.

He ditched all the people who had been clinging to the flotsam with him.

Oops, that’s Haldar. Yeah, Arondir seems decent.

You guys mean Halbrand?

By the way, we don’t know how he got separated from the others on the raft, that part wasn’t shown.

One assumes from your moniker that you enjoyed The Book of the New Sun? Who did you root for there?

Anyway I’m rooting for Nori and her dad. Arondir has been fine so far as was Bronwyn for the little we’ve seen her. Halbrand is being set up to be a reluctant hero. Elendil seems fine.

Harfoot culture is harsh perhaps, but they live in a harsh world. The group simply will not risk the survival of the group by allowing itself to be slowed down helping anyone who cannot pull their own wagon. There are wolves and more that they are avoiding by keeping to their paths and schedules. Their way is harsh but it has kept the group alive a long time.

Not sure Elrond knows the king is wrong. Was a dick though to his friend Durin, not checking in for decades until he needed something from him.

Durin’s wife is lovely.

But yeah, Galadriel is not so wise yet. Thank The One (literally) for anything involving her that is not a disaster so far. Better lucky than good? She’s basically an arrogant Mr Magoo so far.

OK, Arondir seems a decent sort.

The sword, of course.

Arondir is the real hero of this show.

No, he’s explicitly shown untying his part of the raft, and shoving off.

It’s made pretty clear that he didn’t consider it more than an eyeblink of separation. I don’t think it makes him a dick, just inconsiderate, and I doubt he’d repeat the mistake.

He also seemed genuinely sorry about it.
