Amazon Payments - is it safe for buyers?

Someone has agreed to sell me an auto and will let me inspect it first but wants to “see” that I have the money in my Amazon account. They will ship the auto from 800 miles away.

Is this a legit sales process on Amazon?

(they won’t release the title until paid).

Thanks.

How did you find this car?

From Craig’s List:

*How to recognize a vehicle scam attempt on CL:

Shipping a vehicle to you is suggested by seller - Offers to ship a vehicle are virtually 100% fraudulent*

For what it’s worth, these kinds of deals on Craig’s List are often cross posted on many other classified sites as well. I would google the vehicle you are interested in and see how many places it pops up.

So it is a scam (and WAS too good to be true).

How does Amazon Payments assist in this?

In order to “see” that you have money in your Amazon account, they will need your password or they will ask to transfer money to them which they promise to return. There is no other way to do this. Once they have your password, they will use it to drain your account plus any linked credit cards and bank accounts. Or, alternatively, if they ask you to send them the money, you will never see that money again.

Unless we are talking about some rare collector car or exotic sports car, nobody ships a used car 800 miles.
