Amazon Prime Day 2016

It’s Prime Day again at Amazon!

Last year was kind of an epic fail, for their first Prime Day. Most of the stuff that was on sale was junk, and even so it sold out very quickly. Which is weird because the deals weren’t even that great.

But this year they promised to double their stock of Prime Day Sale items. From what I can tell the quality of the selection hasn’t gotten any better but I have not been a very diligent shopper.

Their appliances and do-dads (Echo, Kindle, Fire Stick, etc) are all on sale so it’s definitely a great day to buy any of that stuff.

I haven’t found anything that is on sale that I want but I’ve still managed to save $50. I filled up my cart over the last couple weeks with birthday and Christmas presents for the 3 kids I buy for. So I ended up with:

  • $10 off one item over $20 if you buy via your Echo
  • $10 account credit when you buy a $50 gift card (even if it’s for yourself)
  • $30 off if you spend over $150 using your Amazon Visa

Oh, I did find something on sale that I want - I bought some Mo Willems books for my niece’s birthday that are 20% off through Prime.

I have a couple items tagged as “watch this” for sales later in the day but I don’t see myself being swayed by the deals. We’ll see if I catch them or not.

Anyone else doing any shopping today?

I took a good long look at the KitchenAid Professional Mixer, it’s my wife’s birthday next month and just the other day she was making cookies and complaining we didn’t have a mixer, but we don’t bake near frequently enough to warrant that mixer, even at 100 bucks off $349. I’ll buy her a mixer, and I might even end up spending close to $250 on it, but I just can’t justify buying that one.

It’s also Woot! Bag O’ Crap Day, if that’s of any interest to you.

If I were in the market for a TV, when I looked at midnight there was a 55" curved screen 4k for $650. Would have snagged that.

Since I’m a Prime member now, I would like a basic kindle, so today seems as good as any to pick one up.

I bought an Instant-Pot, which is an electric pressure cooker/slow cooker/rice cooker/other stuff I don’t remember. My parents used to cook with a pressure cooker all the time but I thought the thing was terrifying. Apparently this one is not scary, and I hear great things about it. We’ll see!

I have some down time so I’m going through the prime sales lists, in order of highest % discount first. Any thing I see that might be something I want, I’m looking at the price history using Camel Camel Camel. So far, nothing has come up as an actual great deal - as in, the “original price” they are basing the % sale price off of has never been the price of the item.

For example I was looking at bluetooth wireless speakers that said 73% off the original price of $80 or whatever, but according to CCC they’ve never been sold for over $30 (sale price was $24.99).

Boo!

I keep seeing that Insta-Pot, though. One of their top deals!

I looked through a few things and decided not to buy anything. I really didn’t see anything to write home about, looks like they want to get rid of a lot of junk that’s just sitting around.

I’ve been wanting an Echo, so I splashed out today. Didn’t see anything else of interest to me.

Yeah. I also think that they are encouraging sellers/manufacturers to beef up their review numbers. The speaker I was looking at had a ton of reviews all in the past couple months, many of them from this week (and it’s only Tuesday!) Conversely some of the stuff only has like 3 reviews, so those companies clearly did not have a Review Shill Budget.

But there are diamonds in the rough, and some little incentives that keep it worth checking out.

This one’s a deal at $249.99. You will never, ever, ever need to buy another mixer. If you need to replace parts you can buy them on Amazon. I don’t use mine much but when I do it’s cut time in half over my previous mixer and there’s much less aggravation. I LOVE it.

Oh, I have no doubt it’s a high quality mixer. Is it easy to use? I bought my wife a very highly rated food processor last year that she can’t use unless I’m home because she can’t take the bowl on and off the machine herself (it’s very tight; I have difficulty with it myself).

12 isn’t even a prime.

Amazon is trying to pull off something like Alibaba’s “Singles Day.” Good luck, they topped $14 billion last year.

Well sure, if you’re assuming base 10.

The other thread reminded me that I need a car booster seat. Sure enough, there is a prime day deal on a good one.

I broke down and got one of these also since it really was much cheaper than normal and a friend swears by his.

I got a Fire stick. At less than $30, I’ll try it, along with my Prime account.

Some Wrangler pants that I’d parked in the “save for later” slot in my cart were 30% off today, but otherwise for me, nothing amazing.

On behalf of myself and my friends at the shipping center -------- stop buying stuff. Now! Right now! Our volume today was 97,000. Tomorrow we have been warned to expect 150,000 to 180,000. Thursday maybe another 150,000 and Friday still in the six figures. Management reported that orders topped 1000 per minute and a lot of the best discounts were on large and/or heavy things like 60 inch televisions and barbells. :smack:

Go back to buying from Amazon July 20 once all the temps are gone and we can process everything in a normal (well ---- for us) manner.

Pffft. Thought I wanted the basic Kindle reader. Put it in my cart early afternoon but wanted to keep shopping through the day. The “Lightning Deal” expired apparently and now can’t get the $50 price. I deleted it from my cart. Emptied my cart completely, signed out and back in again. When I click on the item description, it says it’s putting the $50 price in my cart, but sits and spins and doesn’t do it. So I guess no Kindle today. But it’s still listed as a Lightning Deal at $50. But I can’t put it back in my cart.

I did end up buying my wife the stupid 30 lb mixer. Sorry kopek.
.

I was looking for a few minutes this morning, and a I stumbled on a knock-off Furminator thing at a totally fab price. It’s a high-tech brush for animals. Always been intrigued, never wanted to drop the 50-60 bucks. But I put it in may cart and forgot about it. Deal didn’t go down. Whatever. It’s just an internet shopping frenzy.
