The night of the Kentucky tornadoes Northwestern Indiana recorded a brief, small by tornado standards, tornado. It was the first Chicago area December tornado on record.
All of this is happening around me in Nebraska as I type this.
Be safe!
I’m lying on a couch at the blood bank, donating platelets. They are hovering over me protectively.
Yes. The track for that one ended about 10 miles from where I live.
As it happens, we didn’t have any more damage than downed tree limbs and one knocked over utility pole, maybe some airborne roof shingles. That’s partly our building codes but also because it was an EF0
Still - first December tornado in our area.
We have high wind warnings for tonight. We’ve been told to expect power outages (note to self: unplug just about everything prior to going to bed to avoid power spikes.) We’ve been told tornadoes are unlikely in our parts but it could happen.
Grrr…
I respectfully disagree.
Here in central Kansas, in my almost 70 years, we’ve had sixty degree temperatures in December in several different years. It’s not common, but it’s also not unusual.
But, in my lifetime, we’ve never had a December tornado.
The weather this winter, as has been noted, isn’t right.
Be careful Miss Boo!
I’m in Northern Indiana. December weather is 10-20 degrees, maybe 30-35 in a warm year, and several inches of snow.
It’s 60 effin’ degrees here.
We’re getting tornadoes watches AGAIN tonight.
Maybe in your neighborhood it’s not a problem, but in mine this sort of warmth in December generates storms, high winds (already gusting to 60 now), and yes, tornadoes. YMMV.
We had gusts of wind today over 70 mph, with a little rain and actually a bit of hail. Dust storms shut down I-70 in western Kansas. Insane weather for December.
Made it home from donating at the blood bank~during which the electricity faltered several times, but they had backup generators. Lots of traffic lights out along my driving route home. My home electricity seems fine but the winds be howling and groaning around my humble abode. Not to worry, it’s a one story house with a good basement~been here 140+ years so far!
When I got to my dentist appt earlier the University had just closed the Dental College, too late to let me know. Made another appt for Christmas Eve Eve (the 23rd), to get the cleaning benefit from my dental insurance for the coverage year. I was kind of looking forward to that new toothbrush. At least I didn’t pitch my current one in the trash on my way out the door.
Did I mention how the wind was howling? Yikes. My next door neighbor has two campers and a pickup under jerry-rigged sheet metal shelters, which are sounding like the end of the world as we know it. Mad Max Fury version 2.
Here’s the scene (10 seconds) in Lincoln today:

Here W of Chicago, the wind is HOWLING. They forecast gusts to 65 mph. Dayum!
Tornadoes not too far from me.

Here’s the first AP story about today’s events:
One more bizarre point about yesterday’s powerful windstorm:
During the winter season, the wind almost always blows from the north. Yesterday, the wind blew from the south/southwest, which is highly unusual in December, to say the least. And certainly not 100-mph winds.
Was it a derecho? It sounds like one.
Evidently.
It did not meet the NWS’s definition.
My area got rain and wind, but nothing like what was predicted.
Some of my FBFs in the Des Moines area mentioned that they not only smelled smoke, but that it had an electrical or plastic “note”, if you will. Turns out there was an electrical fire at one of the colleges, and with the high winds, it would make sense that lots of people could smell it.
FWIW, NASA says otherwise:
Neat little video there showing the storm’s progress.
Two tornadoes in Minnesota, “historical and unprecedented” as every newscaster has mentioned multiple times.
One was about 15 miles from where my daughter lives. It was not a fun night for them, huddled in the first floor hallway, cat in carrier, with a bunch of other apartment residents.
They escaped with a bunch of shingles torn off the building and branches down.
Family in Rochester, young couple, she’s due any day, had a large tree come down on their garage. Totaled one of their trucks.
