Are you or your gun a possible threat?
Informing the officer you are armed makes you, most often, even less of a threat.
OK Look, in case it isn’t clear I’m pointing out the imbalance between police and citizens in US culture right now. The police have all the power and the citizens have none. But the police are public servants not your master or your betters. They have become a menace.
They need to update that list. Because as of June 2022 in Ohio,
Citizens will no longer have the duty to “promptly” notify every law enforcement officer during an official stop. Instead, the person must disclose that they are carrying a concealed handgun only after an officer asks.
Thank fuck. That’s the way it should be.
Really? I strongly disagree. A part of the reason why American cops are so triggerhappy is the proliferation of guns in our society (the way cops decide who to be triggerhappy towards is a much more loaded topic, of course). Much of the truly terrible “us-vs-them” mentality that American police training emphasizes is in place precisely because of how many armed people police have to deal with. I don’t see how letting legally armed people keep their firearms secret, just like illegally armed people, is a good idea.
Also, can’t cops just ask “are you armed?” at the start of every interaction to make this law completely moot?
I can’t count the number of times I’ve been asked this, trick, question.
Trick because if I answer “Yes, I have a pocket knife.” I’ve just stated that in my mind my knife is, in fact, a weapon and not just something sharp to cut shit with.
PS Thanks for typing my comment in your preceding paragraph!
Here we are one year later and Ohio has removed any restrictions or training requirements for carrying a concealed weapon. Having those restrictions on CC is just about the only form of gun control that is useful, effective, and enforceable.
This policy is a direct attempt by rural constituency Republicans to increase violence in cities.
They are an entirely different (and elevated) militarized caste of people with different rights from regular people. Qualified immunity sure is a f***.
Do you know what Qualified Immunity is?
Seriously? As in pro-gun constituencies supposedly want crime? If the people of Ohio are anything like the rural Republicans here in Minnesota, what they want is for criminals to be acutely aware that if they stick a gun in someone’s face they may themselves get shot dead as a result. As for those that don’t end up so, the gun crowd I associate with is universally favor of mandatory non-pleadable punishment for gun crimes, up to and including a swiftly applied noose for murders committed with guns.
Carry shouldn’t be banned just so the police can have a “free-fire zone”, where they can presume anyone carrying who isn’t a badged police officer or security guard is up to no good.
What were the restrictions?
And, are you of the opinion that criminals apply for a CCW?
What a wonderful argument! Using that logic, let’s abolish driver’s licenses because some illegal drivers won’t apply for them.
What are you talking about?
I’m not sure why this ad popped up on my Facebook feed, but it’s ultra-cool!
It “will have your little one giddy with excitement.”
Unclear if it’s really full-auto or not.
