Anyone remember where and how America Online stored email that you wanted to save in versions prior to 3? I have one large gap in my otherwise unabridged email history and I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to the era in which I used AOL but before version 3 was released.
I have this kinda vague memory that AOL didn’t nuke your old “already been read” email back then, and that you could log on and go back in time and read it any time you wanted. If that’s accurate, I’m probably screwed. (Did they just keep it for you a whole lot longer, or did they keep it for eternity? I don’t recall!).
Was there an AOL 2.5-2.8 equivalent of the <UserName’s> Filing Cabinet files used by AOL 3.0 and beyond? Or were local copies preserved only if you intentionally went to the File menu and manually did a Save As for each and every email?
I probably don’t have the files anyway, but it would be useful to know what the heck I’m looking for.
