American and British technical vocabulary

The other thread about nuts got me to thinking on this:
It seems that Americans and British have quite different terms for many simple “technical” or mechanical things. Most all of these things were in common use before the War of Independence, like wrenches/spanners and virtually all of the parts of a gun. Many devices since devised on one side of the sea are known by a very different name on the other (radio tubes/valves). How did it come to pass that the sister nations have such divergent terms for the same things?

We Brits only invented them, you Americans found a way to market them, the first thing that had to go was the name!!

(drops the Crescent wrench and Channel-Locks)

Whaddyamean by that?
