American car headlights of yesteryear

D’oh – I meant crossover, not hybrid.

The other kind of hybrid.

I remember it, but don’t particularly miss it. What I don’t remember is the last car I had that had that knob thingie. It must have been quite some time ago.

Many, MANY years ago – almost 40 – I pulled into a parking lot at noon, turned off my headlights (I grew up riding motorcycles and always drive with low beams) and headed into a restaurant. Guy sitting on the curb (restaurant was attached to a motel) said, “Did you know your headlights were on?”

Now, I had turned them off, and no cars back then did that automatically, so I have zero idea what his point was. But I was also in a crappy mood, and just responded, “Yeah, there’s a switch on the dashboard” and kept walking.

Later I realized that he might well have decided to beat the snot out of me. Ah, youth …

Indeed. For more, see subreddit r/f***yourheadlights (but not with the asterisks). It’s a real problem; DOT has abdicated responsibility here.

Yeah, pulling that knob gave a gratifying sense of physical control.
But in those days, switching on the brights (high beam) was the exact opposite..frustrating as hell.
You stomped with the toe of your left shoe , and hoped you hit the switch on the first attempt. If not, guess whether to move your foot 2 inches left, or 3 inches forward, and then stomp again.

I think the last car I drove that I had to pull the headlights on, was my Dad’s 1976 Dodge.

My 1986 Honda had the headlights on the turn direction stick, my 1990 Jeep had a simple switch on the dash, my 2000 Chevy had an auto-turn-on-off ability, as does my 2012 Chevy, though I can override that.

I still remember Dad’s 1976 Dodge though, putting on the headlights, and clomping around for the hi-beams in rural areas. Geez, who thought that was a good idea?

With my old car I would leave the parking lights on while I (illegally, no parking on my side of the street) left my car there to unload when I got home late at night. Frequently, I’d do bike maintenance while I was on duty at the ambulance if we didn’t have calls, so it was the bike, my stand, tools & cleaning supplies + things like leftovers & a change of clothes.
When I got my new car I left the parking lights on & took something in the house; when I came out it was dark. Hmmm, maybe I imagined leaving them on, so I put them on again & took the next thing in the house & put it away & came out to dark lights again. Stoopit @#$%& “improvements”. Oh well, sorry neighbors, but I’m now going to put on my hazard lights which are far more annoying with their blinking on & off than the same lights with a steady on.
A) I needed to pull the keys out as they were on the same keychain as the house keys &
B) I didn’t want to leave the keys in the car late at night when it was going to be out of my sight; waaay to many cars have been stolen that way.
