Question. Americans. Having travelled to the States on a number of occasions, and having recently worked for American Airlines - “Something Special in the Air” - I began to notice a peculiarity with the Yank of the species. Just one I hear you cry? But an important and disturbing one I’m sure… ‘Odd’ eyes. Not necessarily crossed but most certainly affected. Its hard to explain, a bit like the world they were looking at was too big to take in all at once. Anyone else noticed this, or can anyone explain what I am seeing? At the time I had this eerie body snatchers feeling…
There is a medical condition which causes the eyes to appear to bulge out slightly. IIRC the actress Allyce Beasley, who played the secretary on Moonlighting and does a whole mess of voice-over work in commercials, has this condition. I’ll try to see if I can dredge up the name and a good citation and post that later.
having worked for said airlines myself, i can quite safely say, without fear of reproach, that what you state could be said to be true. But look at the facts. 95% of residents of the USA do not leave the the continental united states in their entire lifetime, it is unfair to base this assumption on the 5% that do travel. I would like to think this 5% (even less when you consider i worked exclusively in London) are mainly buisnessmen are not representative of the nation as a whole.
[sarcasm] yeah, something has to be wrong with people who are not exactly like you. I mean, really, what’s up with all those Asian eyes? [/sarcasm]
But seriously, I’m not sure what you mean. As an American who has travelling in Europe, I have not noticed any difference in eyes among the general populace.
Something I hadn’t considered. Blimey, you think so? I’d like to think my appearance makes peoples eyes bulge, but just Americans. !Que va! I’m looking in the mirror now though, and you’re right, I AM handsome. No Clooney but. Maybe Cloonet butt.
But with ref to 95% of Americans who don’t cross the pond, this can’t possibly be true can it?
Is it possible that you were noticing people who were wearing contacts? I’ve noticed that there’s a sort of wide-eyed look to contact wearers.
95% strikes me as exaggerated, but I would guess that if you ignore travel while in military service, 75% of Americans have never been out of the the U.S., except possibly for trips to Canada and Mexico.
Stimpy-
We have noted your interest in our group of “elightened” members. Soon our re-education team will arrive at your domicile to transport you to one of our indoctrination centers. Resistance is futile, and unnescessary! This condition is merely a way of spotting fellow members in our “club”.
Until said team arrives, keep repeating: “This is for the best, just relax. This is for the best, just relax”. Soon you will know the joys of working mindlessly for the collective whole.
Thank You, and have a nice day!
