I used to know a pastor who would just exclaim, “Thank God for food!”
Wow. I didn’t hear about this happening. Every time something like this happens I just get really upset. Its just so impossibly silly from so many different angles. Personally as a non-believer, I am not offended by the use of a prayer, meditation or blessing to open the senate meeting. I always considered atheism as a non-religion and shouldn’t be considered with the same regard. As long as anyone who wants to be represented has the opportunity to do so I think its actually a lovely tradition. It seems like a good way to instill some meaning into each session rather than just saying “alright dawgs, lets get this shit going” These men and women are actually making laws that guide the people of this nation. I just cannot fathom how someone can shout “abomination” over this sincere man repeating the word “peace”
After watching the video I went to the American Family Associations website. If you guys haven’t looked at it I would suggest doing so if you have a morbid curiosity. I’m from Tennessee so I’m no stranger to red state politics. I actually had to convince a family member there weren’t that many Asian people in san francisco before he would even come to visit me.
Okay I’ve had some wine and now I’m rambling. I’m just so frustrated and confused by the whole thing.
I don’t waste my time convincing my family members who have such fears. I tell them straight up that they’re family not worth having.
I honestly don’t get ceremonial deism. I mean, I can think of several reasons why a religious person might want it, but none of them work in the end. And i’m usually able to understand reasons for all sorts of crazy stuff* - not agree with, but at least say “Sure, from this point of view, this makes sense”. I don’t get why someone would be for ceremonial deism at all, at least in terms of good motivations. I’m hoping this is just me being unimaginative, though.
*Not that i’m implying religious stuff is crazy, athiests suck too, yadda yadda.
Let’s just root for an Og-and-Shiva SMASH!
