My friend noticed the other day that one of my neighbors had an American Flag on display in front of their house, and there was no light fixed on it during the night time. She said it was illegal to display a United States Flag without illuminating it.
I’ve never heard of that before! Is she right?
(And now that I’m thinking about it…should it be the United States flag or the American flag?)
It’s not illegal. But according to flag ettiquette it should be illuminated if it’s flown at night. It also should not be flown in the rain.
An amusing flag story: Police at home once received a call about a possible emergency at the county jail because the flag was upside down. Upside down flags (especially on ships) are a universal distress signal. In fact, the flag was just hung up incorrectly.
Thanks for the quick response! I’m having dinner with said friend tonight, I’ll give her the scoop!
The rule about not flying the flag in the rain no longer exists. The rule was in place because the colors on the old cloth flags could run. This is no longer the case with the nylon flags and they can be flown in the rain.
