American Idol: 2/24

LaToya, Amy and Penboy in the final three. LaToya and Amy went through. LaToya got the most votes.

Skutir Paul would be a cool guest. I’d like to see a Beatles night.

I wonder what Simon would have said to the Beatles when they were starting out.

Latoya may be a good singer but I hated her. Melisma! Ack! If they don’t make her stop it…well, I’ll hate her some more.

Thank you for these comments. I didn’t see Tuesday but I assume Wednesday was basically the same performance? I’m starting to not trust my ears because I didn’t think she was on at all. But I often find myself thinking people weren’t on key and then the judges like them, so I guess maybe I have a tin ear after all!

I’m happy with the results — the top two were the same two that I would have chosen.

I was really shocked by the judges’ fawning over Leah, however. I thought she was adequate, but beaten out by several of the other performers. (My top three would have been LaToya, Amy, and Charly.) It seemed as if they wanted her to go on because it would be cool to have a pretty talented 17-year old girl in the competition. It also wouldn’t hurt with their demographic base of teenage girls — if you’re not going to have any hottie guys talented enough to make it through, at least give them a peer to cheer for.

I was pretty disgusted with the way they kept putting the camera on Leah crying last night, though. It had to be pretty devastating, particularly after all 3 judges had practically promised her she’d move forward with their comments, and then finding out that she hadn’t even made the top 3. She’s a disappointed girl — focus the camera somewhere else, please.

I was disappointed with the judges’ comments on Charly. She had some weak points in her voice and tone at times — but not nearly as many as Leah. And I thought that her performance was very personable. But I may be prejudiced, because I wanted the North Carolina girl to do well. (And she did do well — just not as well as the top two. I wish she’d been on last week instead.)

I thought that both of the two winners had some major bobbles in their performances last night — they did much better the night before.

I was very shocked that Pen Boy made the final three. (I think it’s the teenage girl voting for the hottie factor that brought him in.) He wasn’t bad, but I found his pronounciation of “Lay - dyuh” and “Bay -byuh” to be pretty annoying. Like Randy, I agree he has an interesting voice, which can go to cartoonish at times.

Did anyone else catch Leah crying like a little spoiled baby when she found out PenBoy won? HA! Funny shit.
You know those were “how dare they” tears not disappointment tears.
I was very glad to see her go. First rock band my ass…

I also thought she was way off last night. I wasn’t sure because I was trying to watch the show and type an English paper at the same time, but I’m glad other people noticed it too.

Yes! Finally! Thank you! Stiffler! This has been bugging me ever since I first saw him!

I missed Tuesday’s performance show, so all I can say is that I hope that Amy Adams sang better on Tuesday than she did on Wednesday, because she was downright AWFUL last night. I was shrieking “My ears, they are bleeding! Gah…FLAT FLAT FLAT!!” at the TV while she was on.

Egad.

I think that the worst thing about AI is that the audience is as tone deaf as 99% of the people who try out. It’s like that guy who, during the auditions, was challenged by Simon to go out and find people who thought he could actually sing, and he brought back this guy who said “Well, I’m tone deaf, but he sounds pretty good to me.” Dude. That doesn’t help your case at all.

I liked Pen Boy too, but I had to admit his diction stunk. He deserved to go.

For those who only saw Wednesday’s performances, I’d say that both Amy and LaToya were significantly worse in their Wednesday sing-offs than in their actual semifinal auditions. LaToya, in particular, was pretty close to dead perfect on her high belting on Tuesday night, and she seemed to use less melisma to better effect - I think she used more vocal gymnastics Wednesday night because she knew she just didn’t quite have it the way she did the night before and needed to cover it up.

Anyway, after three weeks, I’m noticing something odd. None of what you might call the conventionally attractive people, of either gender, have won the audience vote. Katie Webber, Elizabeth LeTendre, Lisa Leuschner, Matthew Metzger, John Peter Lewis… all standard, middle America good looking, and none got through. To paraphrase one of my favorite sportswriters - this is the sort of information that is essential to an insider’s understanding of “American Idol.” Unfortunately, I have no idea what it means.

Also, and finally, I feel really sorry for Leah. I know a lot of people delighted in her crying, but I dunno… all I saw was a kid who was bitterly disappointed after having been led to believe that she was going through, and who probably thinks that her mother won’t love her anymore now. I’m not saying she deserved to go through - although I really didn’t think there was much qualitative difference between her performance and those of Amy, Elizabeth, or Charly - but I did feel bad for her.

Latoya London is beautiful, in my opinion–the most attractive contestant aside from the equally beautiful Marque from Group 1. But when you’re talking “middle America” do you mean white America? Something I found interesting from reading some forums on Matthew Rogers was that (warning: generalizations ahead) people on the coast thought he looked old and unattractive while people in the midwest found him more attractive and appealing. (I, for example, think he’s quite attractive, but I have a thing for big, burly dopes.)

Julie

Oh, I think LaToya is lovely, too. I also think Amy Adams is attractive, in her fashion.

But consider: I haven’t seen the demographics, but I’d venture to say that the majority of the voting audience for AI comprises the same demographic that has made Britney Spears an international star in spite of her lack of discernable singing ability. Britney Spears is a certain kind of attractive - and I don’t think it’s that she’s white, because I think, say, Beyonce has that kind of attractive too - and none of the people who’ve made it through so far fit into the Britney/Beyonce mold. Put a different way, LaToya, Amy, and even Camille are quite pretty, but none would ever make, say, a Maxim poll of “beautiful” women over Katie, Elizabeth, or even Leah. Similarly, I can see Matthew Metzger or Marque Lynch on the cover of Seventeen getting swoons from the under 15 set, but not Matt Rogers.

I don’t really know what my point is, if in fact I even have a point. I just think it’s surprising that the folks who one might expect to get votes for purely shallow reasons from the masses - even the ones who had talent to back it up - did not.
