I just got done talking with my mom about American Idol and she says to me, “You know who I hate? That gorpy guy who dances.” (Jon Peter, she meant.) Then she proceeded to cast aspersions on his looks and said that he’s always forcing himself into the group scenes where he’s not wanted. She says he makes her skin crawl, and she hopes he goes home next.
I liked him already, but that settles it. I really want Jon Peter to win now!
I’d love to make over Amy. Everyone says (including myself a few posts ago that she has the Bette Midler thing going). But after seeing her on Tuesday and Wednesday, I don’t think so. She’s just nervous.
First, get a new hair color. Anything, but blue, pink, etc. Then wear something simple, but distinctive. She’s got a very nice voice, and if she would get over the nerves, which is what makes her seem goofy/campy, ala Midler, she would contrast to the “belters.” Latoya (who is fab, btw) Jennifer, and Fantasia. Don’t even try to go up against them.
Take a page from the kd lang/Dusty Springfield/Karen Carpenter book, and just sing. Sometimes there is nothing more powerful than understatemnt. It might just work.
I wouldn’t pick her to win. Because as much as she may improve – George, Matt, and Latoya are going to grow into the stars. Not to mention Jonboy, the flower girl, and Fantasia.
Your advice for Amy is absolutely right, kevja, but it applies to more than Amy. I think that is what makes the cute red-haired kid so distinctive–he just sings. I want to see more emotion and really feeling the lyrics out of all of them.
At the very least, Jennifer wore some decent clothes tonight ;).
As for diversity in the final rounds, I agree. That is what made AI so fun last year. Ruben and Clay were very different, but it didn’t just stop there. It was a very diverse group there. I don’t really want LaToya and Fantasia to both go far (Jennifer being voted off because she is too similar) so we can get some fun different styles at the end. I’d LOVE to see John Stevens, Fantasia, Jon Peter Lewis, and Jasmine in the last 4.
Ryan needs to be more subtle from now on. Did anyone else notice his timing when he was going down the line, telling the finalists who was definitely staying and who was in the bottom three? “Amy, you’re in the bottom three…Jennifer, you’re in the bottom three.” Cut and dried. But before that, it was, “Leah, [long pause] I’m sorry…you’re in the bottom three.”
Granted, the fact that Leah was the first one in the lineup he had to say that to might have had something to do with it. And judging by her rather grim demeanor all through the show, I think she already knew she was toast. But I don’t remember him saying “I’m sorry” to the other two, while he made a big production out of sidelining Leah. It’s not always going to be such a gimme as to who’s going to be cut, so I hope he doesn’t make a habit of this.
And, on a wild tangent here, why do so many people seem to have a problem “translating” Simon’s speech? First it was people hearing “tickle the boxes” when he said “tick all the boxes.” Then today, I read an update which transcribed his comment after Leah’s performance on Tuesday as “I’ve packed your suitcase.” NNNT! He said “I’d pack your suitcase,” as in “If I were you…” except he left that phrase out, I guess to be blunt.
Honestly, people. I could understand if he talked cockney, or hardcore Scottish like in Trainspotting. But he actually has a very posh accent, well enunciated and well modulated. It just happens not to be the dumbed-down Midlantic that’s cultivated by actors such as Hugh Grant. But it shouldn’t be that difficult for Americans to understand.
I was referring to Jennifer who was the 3rd person added to the bottom 3.
I assumed the person who commented just ahead of me was referring to her as well and we were not mentioning names as we posted shortly after the show aired and didn’t want to give spoliers. I was not surprised that Amy was in the bottom 3, but I was surprised that she was not in the bottom 2.
