Might as well get this thread started. Maybe we can have a game predicting what Tarantino will tell various contestants if he is “in character” from Pulp Fiction.
– fade in to fantasy sequence –
QT: Did you see the sign out in front for lame-ass Mormon choirboys?
JPL: Excuse me?
QT: Did you see the sign out in front for lame-ass Mormon choirboys?
JPL: Ah, no.
QT: That’s because listening to lame-ass Mormon choirboys ain’t our f—in’ business.
I was going to say the same thing about their movie choices. I mean I know they’re young, but you’d figure they were polling a bunch of 10 year olds with all these Disney flicks popping up…
George Huff–Against all Odds was in the Wiz? I must be missing something. He reminds me so much of K. Lo, it’s not even funny. Well done though and much better than that worthless Craggle! Sure, he could have been better, but solid. Different song would have been better.
Jennifer Hudson–Christ! She NAILED it! Oh my! I was stunned that she sang the same song Trenyce did, but I honestly think Jennifer did better. That says a ton considering Trenyce’s power. Yea, she did miss some notes, but she was still exceptional and will indeed EMERGE as a frontrunner, unless she gets shafted. I’m with Simon.
Jon–Well, he impressed me. Much better than last week(and I actually liked last week’s performance). I enjoyed it.
Diana–Much as I hate to say this, I think she’s now out of her league. I mean, she was nice, but she lacks the power to sing such a song. Quentin is right(in fact, I think he’s the best guest judge ever). I also agree with Simon.
Fantasia–Perfect. Nothing else needs to be said.
Jasmine–Not bad, but easy to ignore. That’s not a good sign. Weak and weak must go away! I’m with Simon.
John Stevens–Smooth and classy. Loved it.
Latoya–Polished, refined and above all, powerful. Fantastic.
Bottom Three:
Jasmine
Diana
John(better not get eliminated though)
I am interested to hear what the folks who don’t like Fantasia (doesn’t somebody call her “ghettogirl”?) say about tonight’s performance. When she finished, I said to my husband that IMHO that was the best AI performance ever–and then Randy said the same thing. I love it when they agree with me. Really, that was a great performance. She hit the notes and conveyed the emotion.
George Huff–Against all Odds - Good, not his best, but I am a big fan.
Jennifer Hudson-- I jsut don’t like her performances at all. Or her face. I just have trouble sitting through her performances. Not sure what it is. But I would not be upset if she goes.
Jon-- I actually liked this performance. He’ll never win, but I hope he stays around another week.
Diana-- Not bad. Not great, not bad.
Fantasia-- Again, she has a decent voice, but I don’t like all her dramatics, and I hate her attitude. I really hope she doesn’t win.
Jasmine-- She’s a cutey. I could listen to her sing all day. Not strong enough to win, but I would rather hear her than Hudson any day.
John Stevens-- Great week for him, though I still don’t like him very much. Tarantino nailed it. It would help if the kid had range.
Latoya-- Performance of the night for me. Wow. Wow. Great song choice for her as well. This girl can sing. I hope it is her and George final 2.
Maybe I’m in a bad mood or something but I was not impressed tonight. More specifically:
George–started off weak with a terrible song. An OK performance–he should make it through. How can anyone choose The Wiz–The Wiz ferchrissake–as his favorite movie?
Jennifer–I’m not a fan so I’m biased. Also, I loathe Whitney songs, mostly because Whitney is Whitney and no one else is so the songs are usually butchered. A good performance.
Penboy–Was it the sound system or is his voice actually that weak? At least he showed some personality. I thought it was a decent performance–he’ll be around for a few weeks.
Diana–Are you fucking kidding me? Do these people get any advice on song choice? Apparently not. Horrid song, horrid performance. She should be in the bottom three.
Fantasia–Great song and a good performance but at least according to my television she mangled it in parts by screeching. The judges obviously heard something different.
Jasmine–Boring. She should be in the bottom three.
John–Finally a good performance from him but he’s young and outclassed in this competition. Maybe he needs to be more of a crooner than a singer?
LaToya–As with Fantasia, the judges obviously heard something different than I did. I thought it was just OK again.
All of that being said, Fantasia, Latoya, and Jennifer are the frontrunners, except that I think Jennifer is completely overshadowed by Latoya and Fantasia. George could slip into the final three.
My bottom three:
Diana
Jasmine
John
The Wiz, Sister Act II, Dead Poets Society, Finding Nemo, Lilo & Stitch, Aladin, Findin Nemo. George is the only one who picked something interesting… haven’t these kids seen anything but Disney movies and old comedies on TBS? Even John “I Love Soundtracks” picks a recent Disney movie.
Fantasia picked the best song, but her performance wasn’t that “magical.” It was the best of the eight, though. I didn’t think LaToya or Jennifer picked good songs, so I don’t care that they sang them well. George was OK, but again, didn’t like the song. JPL and John Stevens did their best performances yet, but that’s not saying much. I hope Jasmine, Diana, and Jennifer hit the seal as America makes a statement: NO MORE WHITNEY. NO MORE CELINE DION!
I wish that JPL kid would get booted because I think he’s horrible. Always singing out of breath, and I’ve seen epileptic fits better coordinated than his dancing. But he’s cute, so people will vote for him.
John has no energy, no attitude. He’s completely flat. Isn’t American Idol about pop music? “Pop” being short for “popular”? I don’t think that anyone under 65 will be buying his albums. Nice enough voice, I guess, but not something I would pay to listen to. If I want to hear Sinatra, I’ll play Sinatra, thanks.
As for Diana, that Titanic song should be illegal. Anyone singing it should be sentenced to a horrible and painful death.
Forget the singing. Idol Fansites got the mp3’s on their website ten minutes after the show ended. Holy Cow!
Fantasia was amazing. I love, LOVE this song and she did an incredible job of it. Jennifer was great too. It was very Whitney, but she showed that she has the pipes to pull it off.
JPL needs to get off my screen. He did something awful to Jailhouse Rock and I’m not sure I can recover from the horror. Bad doesn’t even begin to describe this performance.
Best of the night: Fantasia and Jennifer
Worst of the night: JPL, Jasmine, and Diana
BTW, Quentin Tarantino is AWESOME! I’m glad that a guest judge actually came on and gave constructive criticism instead of saying everyone was great!
It’s not often I feel qualified to give wardrobe advice, but John does not need to wear a white jacket. It makes him look like a corpse.
Fantasia and LaToya were both great this week and Jon Peter (aka The Singing Hobbit) bought himself a temporary stay of execution, but the writing is on the wall. I don’t think any of the white contestants are going to make it into the final Five (not a judgment, just an observation) and the final two will be LaToya and George (hopefully).
Right on!!! Quentin was the best part of the night. He absolutely knew what he was talking about; he knew the show and the kids. He was interesting. . . not just the same old “I love your voice” garbage. And he wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is. Loved him!! He could come back every week and I’d be happy.
I don’t know who selected Jennifer Hudson’s and Diana DeGarmo’s dresses, but that person (persons??) should be fired immediately. The dresses were downright ugly and made both girls look old, tired and ugly! On the other hand, La Toya’s chain top was fabulous!!!
Hated John Redhead’s ensemble. Didn’t think much of his singing either.
Penboy’s “Jailhouse Rock” was the only up tempo song of the night. Thank you, Penboy, for getting us away from the slushy ballads for at least a brief moment.
Diana: no, no, no!!! AI should be a No Celine Zone!!! Anyone who sings any Celine Dion song should automatically be eliminated. Same with Whitney Houston. So Jennifer Hudson: no, no, no!!
Fantasia: I don’t like her. I didn’t like her “Summertime.” Too many extra added attractions. Unflattering extreme closeups that filled the screen with mouth, teeth, lips. . . . ick!
La Toya: good, but I’m tired of that song.
Jasmine: very forgettable. Do I sound like a grump?
I’m like the other poster who may just have been in a bad mood but didn’t think much of the whole show. Maybe it’s because my George was just Meh!
I’d pick Jasmine, Diana or John Redhead to go tomorrow night.
George – thought it was okay, he sounded good but it didn’t fit the song.
Jennifer – Wasn’t fantastic but it was very good. There were a few spots where I think she did the wrong thing but very good.
JPL – It was a decent performance but his voice was off here and there. He’d be good on broadway but as a pop singer? At this point in the competition he is totally outclassed. He gave it everything he had and as an overall performance it was good but I wouldn’t buy the CD.
Diana – I liked it but I happen to like the song (shutup, I hate the movie). Overall I think she did an okay performance. I’m a little bias on this one. There was something missing though.
Fantasia - I really really hate that song and Macy Gray singing it makes me hate it even more. I’m not going to put down her voice, I just don’t happen to like it personally.
Jasmine – not terrible, she missed a note or two here and there.
John Stevens - I liked it very much. He doesn’t have the stuff to win though.
Latoya - As far as I’m concerned she’s a level or two above everyone else in the competition. She never misses and doesn’t have a bad week. She only sings what she needs to and doesn’t fall back on the run (fantasia). She should win.
I got a phone call during John Stevens’ number and I wasn’t taping the show. Does anybody remember what the judges and Quentin said about him? (I also missed what they said about Jon Peter.)
This is what it is about American Idol. You find out what the theme of the show is, and you think “It’ll be interesting to see what ______ does.” I can never put LaToya, Jennifer, Diana, or Jasmine in that blank. They don’t pick interesting songs. John, Jon, George, and Fantasia I can put in the blank. For me it’s not about pop idols. We have too many of them anyway. It’s just about having an interesting program. If it was all LaToyas singing all Whitney and Celine Dion songs, it would be way too boring to watch. Until this season, I always assumed it was and that’s why I never watched.
They basically all said, “I don’t like you that much, but you did pretty good tonight cause it was your genre,” etc., including Quentin. Simon said “You have no charisma,” which might be the bullet that kills him.
I’ve got this theory that the most memorable negative comment of Simon’s is given to the person who leaves.
Leah - “I’ve packed your bags.”
Matt - “You sit up there with that nauseating smile.”
Amy - “You remind me of Jay Leno.”
Camile - “Elton John has thrown his TV out the Hotel Window.”
John S - “You have no charisma.”
For my theory to remain valid, John would have to go tomorrow.
For once, Randy didn’t ream him. Paula liked it too, and so did QT. Simon slammed him for lack of charisma. Which I can’t entirely argue with, only because he didn’t quite bring the right degree of heartbreak. But hey, it was his genre, his song, really, and he sang it beautifully, so shuddup. (That’s aimed at all the haters out there, not you.)
Also, be glad you missed the product-placement number. Somebody oughta indict 19Entertainment for trafficking in kiddie porn. I mean, I think JS is adorable, but keep him covered up! And not in white, either!
As for what they said about JPL, no one mentioned what seemed painfully obvious to me: he forgot the words, and he cannot dance! Simon did point out that “This is not Comedy Idol”, though. HobbitBoy, you can go any time.
