American Idol: Round 1 (3/11)

In order of my personal preference:

Trenyce: She was awesome. Love her voice and style.

Ruben: Nice voice (lay off the runs though)

Kim C.: She did great with that song

Josh: It wouldn’t hurt him to lose a few lbs. but I liked his pushups. Good voice and just seems really nice.

Vanessa: Over-the-top but fun to watch

Carmen: Most improved. I didn’t think she was bad at all and it looked like she was having fun.

Julia: Decent voice, nothing special.

Ricky: He creeps me out but he did okay with that song.

Clay: Simon was right - Motown: The Musical. And I’m sorry, he looks weird.

Kim L.: Boring and she sounded off at some points. She needs a stylist too.

Corey: Not digging the falsetto

Charles: Zzzzzzzzzzz

I really liked Clay, I thought he seemed the most genuinely nice. I loved the part after Paula gave her comments, he thanked her and she said, “No, thank you,” and he said No, thank you!
What a cutie.

Kimberly L. and Julia - boring (I thought Simon’s Burger King comment was hilarious). I didn’t like Carmen’s country take on her song, but at least it was something different from the others. I also liked Ruben and Kim C.

Oh, and I was glad to hear Simon tell Josh to lose a few pounds, just because it meant he wasn’t limiting that criticism to the girls. And I kept expecting Paula to lift her shirt, the way she was swinging and moving her arms to the music.

Kimberly Locke: Best she ever looked! Motown suits her. Great as always, but the “wave” part kind of made me slightly cringe . Very good performance though.

Joshua Gracin–He needs to wash his jeans! Anyway, nice voice, as always, but he seemed weaker than in past performances.

Charles–Weak. Easy to igore. He looked cute though.

Kimberly Caldwell–Looked stunning, as usual. Quite strong, but she’s obviously more of a “rocker chic” than Motown. Great prescence. Overall, fairly good.

Ricky Smith–What’s with the “ha” stuff? Nervous? Anyway, I was impressed. Motown is for him! Perfect song choice.

Julia Demato–Looked very cute. Performance was nice, but that’s it.

Clay Aikin–Perfect song for him. As always, among the better performances.

Vanessa–Looked cute, but this time, I wasn’t impressed with her performance. Yes, she did remind me of Bette Midler, which is a good thing.

Corey Clark–He looked like he just got out of jail! Anyway, the song was perfect for him. Very good!

Carmen–Better than I expected, but not quite as good as some others. She’s not very consistant. Even if she did improve, for me, it’s too little, too late.

Trenyce–Very beautiful in EVERY WAY! She is indeed a goddess! Best performance of the night!

Ruben–Adorable! Perfect song for him, excellent!

My vote goes to Trenyce, and I think that Charles will end up getting the boot!

Pretty good show tonight. Trenyce still scares me. I did not understand the raves she got from the judges. Ruben was interesting. Still can’t stand Kimberly Caldwell; there’s something about her that just rubs me the wrong way. I think Ricky will be bumped off first. I dunno. He just didn’t impress me much tonight and seems out of his depth.

I just hope Ricky and Corey get booted off really quick. That fingernail-on-chalkboard-shreaking falseto is like a railroad spike through my spine. Ruben was best. Clay was good. I love Julia’s voice although I know that few people agree. Kim C. in the 80’s Madonna-wanna-be clothes was strange, but sang well again.

Oh god, Julia’s voice was horrible. What was that thing she was doing to the national anthem during her video clip? Egads. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. Please don’t do that again. Her performance was completely forgettable. She got even more negative points from me when she badmouthed Simon after he told her not to take any bows. She bent over after her performance and her boobs practically popped out. She didn’t let him finish saying it was because of her shirt and not because of her singing. It was too tacky to get all sassy before she really knew what he was saying.

What did y’all think of Vanessa’s dancing monkey comment to Ryan before the break? Was that really part of the script? No one else seemed to have any scripted dialogue with Ryan.

I figure Julie or Charles will get the boot. Even Carmen, bless her heart, had a better performance than those two.

Evidently the spell Corey put on the judges is still holding up. He’s good, but not up to the praise they gave him.

Reuben and Kimberly L. have been my favorites, but I was disappointed in their preformances tonight.

Why do I not remember Carmen? Where’d she come from?

I think Trenyce is more laid back since getting a second chance. She was awesome!

Clay was great too.

What’s up with those ugly shirts some of the guys were wearing? They looked like some pajamas my dad wore.

BTW, I love Ruben. His face is so expressive. He was all smiles with the other judges and when it got to Simon, Ruben’s whole face changed. For a brief moment he had a look of absolute panic on his face. I think he was expecting Simon to say something really horrible.

Clay was fantastic. I know what Simon meant about Motown - The Musical, but Clay is still one of the better singers on the show.

This was the first time I heard Kimberly C. sing. I liked that little gravelly thing she’s got going. It fits her.

Ruben is my favorite–I’d buy a CD to listen to his voice. Clay is the other front runner for me. Again, I’d pay to listen to him. Finally, Kimberly C. I don’t like her, for no apparent reason, but she has a great voice. If she was singing the right songs, I might buy the CD. The rest–several have potential, but these three stand out so far.

This is a whole package competition…voice, showmanship, sex appeal, charm, personality. On that basis, I gots to give it to CLAY. Yeah, he * does *look a little weird, but Paula has it right: it’s the confidence. You have to love a guy that looks that geeky who manages to pull it all together and come across like he’s The Chairman with humilty. He slays me.

Apart from that, I don’t think anyone sucked hard, but Charles, Julia and Josh are all completely boring. Kim Caldwell annoys me, but she does have the looks and the pipes. Locke was okay, I know she can be better. Ruben is just a big sweet, talented huggy bear. Vanessa is a charmer, but tonight was not her night. The rest…shrug. We’ll see.

My call for the big loser tomorrow is Charles.

I thought the worst of the night were Corey, Charles, and Kimberly L. Corey just sounds awful to me–off-key and bad timing. I don’t get what the judges are thinking when they praise him. Kimberly L. just seemed to be shouting, which has been my criticism of her all along. Powerful and loud doesn’t always = good.

My favorites of the night were Kim C, Josh, Clay, and Carmen. Carmen because it was nice to hear someone do something different with their song, plus she sounded good.
And now, the most important part. The best looking contestants (I’m sticking with girls, somebody else can rate the guys):

  1. Kimberly Caldwell
  2. Julia Demato (looked better tonight than ever, rivaled Kimberly)
  3. Trenyce

I usually think Carmen is cute and I liked her performance tonight, but she had too much makeup on or something.

Julia looked smokin’ hot tonight-- I didn’t hear a word she sang. Kim C still seems like a bitch to me.
Kim L is probably the best singer left now that Frenchy’s gone.
Ruben was very good too.
I still HATE that fat pig Josh. At least he didn’t salute tonight.
Cory just seems too slick and untrustworthy.
Clay is a good singer but a total dork.

The rest just seem kind of bland and unremarkable. One of them will go, I have no idea which.

I predict that Ruben, Clay and Kim L. will be the front runners. I just hope that Josh and Kim C don’t hang around too long. Last time around It couldn’t stand Nikki, I thought the bitch would NEVER leave. I have a feeling that Kim C is going to like that this time around.

I missed some performances - I did happen to see Julia’s and I wasn’t impressed - she seemed flat on a some notes.

Josh is the military guy, I believe. I thought he was pretty good.

Tibs.

Kimberly Locke: I thought she looked OK, but I wasn’t crazy about her performance. She was off rhythmically at the beginning, and went flat every time she held a note. That may have been on purpose, as a stylistic thing, but it sounded odd to me. She seemed out of her element singing a faster song, like she couldn’t keep up with the pace. Too bad, because I thought her voice the was superb last time.

Joshua Gracin: I don’t know what people see in him. I can’t stand his voice - it’s too nasal.

Charles: I loved him last time, but this time I thought he was only OK. I think he’s cute in a puppy-dog sort of way, so I hope he doesn’t go yet. He just seems really sweet.

Kimberly Caldwell: I keep wanting to like her more than I actually do. She’s this round’s rocker chick for sure, but really is only so/so. I thought she chose the song well - hard to pick a motown song to rock to, but she managed it. Pretty good job tonight, but I don’t think she has a chance to make it all the way.

Ricky Smith: He was OK. Not crazy about his voice.

Julia Demato: Boring. I can’t stand her, can’t stand her voice, and what the hell was she doing to the National Anthem? She seems very full of herself, and not in a good way. Yucko.

Clay Aikin: Clay always seems to be performing on Broadway. I like his voice, but his movments and stage presence are just too showy for pop. He’s got a good career ahead of him on the stage, though. Overall, I think he’s the kind of guy that can win contests, but necessarily sell albums. (Until he gets to Mandy Patinkin status.)

Vanessa: Love her! Not the strongest voice, but I wish I could just hang out with her. Hope she sticks around.

Corey Clark: I don’t like his voice. I’ve never liked it. I couldn’t believe he made it past the first audition. Why is he here? I think they chose him because of his 'fro, and now that’s gone, too.

Carmen: Sweet girl. She’s OK, but has a funny vibrato to her voice. No chance of winning, it’s just a matter of time before she’s gone.

Trenyce: I really liked this performance. What’s up with her teeth? They’re huge, and she’s always licking them, like they’re dried out. How awful to have to live like that. Good voice, though, and a very polished performance.

Ruben: Clearly the winner in the end. Fantastic, laid back, amazing voice, sweet, funny, great! Love him. He’s the reason I’m watching.

Prediction:
Ruben will win in the end.
I’d get rid of Julia at this point, but I think there are enough people who like her to keep her around awhile. I think Charles is gone.

I swear I just don’t get the appeal of Kim Caldwell. It must be the blonde bimbo thing or something because the girl is, at best, a mediocre singer. Admittedly, she performed well last night, but I’ll say about her what Simon said about Vanessa – she’s a better performer than she is a singer. And you know why people grind their voice when they sing? Because they Don’t Sing Well! They can’t find a note and hold it, so they grind it, thinking it sounds sexy or something. It doesn’t. It just sounds unprofessional and crappy.

Josh surprised me. I really thought he was overrated, but I think he sounded pretty good last night. However, if Simon thinks Clay sounded like Motown on Broadway, how could he miss that Josh sounded like Motown in Nashville? He actually managed to make a rockin’ Motown song sound like a Country ballad! Good, but not my style. He may make it to the top 5, but no way can he win.

As for Julia, her performance last night sucked. She seemed scared in front of such a big, live audience or something. All she did was shift her weight from one foot to the other, moving side-to-side. However, her singing voice outshined Kim Caldwell by about 1000 volts. Julia can sing. She hits her notes, she holds them and they sound crisp and clear. None of that gurgling crap going on. She needs help with her stage presence for sure, but she’s far superior to Kim C talent-wise.

Ruben was the biggest shocker for me last night. I kept wondering what anyone saw in him and how he’d managed to make it this far. But his voice sounded great and he made that song his own. I was very impressed. Let’s see if he can stay consistent. I predict he’ll go far.

And speaking of consistent – I don’t care if Clay has the geek look going on – he’s the absolute winner as far as talent and stage presence in this competition. He’s confident, he’s charming, he’s fun and he’s got an awesome voice. He has never failed to come through no matter what song he’s sung or under what circumstances he’s had to sing them (a capella, piano only, live audience, etc.). He’s downright the best in this bunch and I hope he wins it all.

I think Vanessa is adorable and I really, really like her voice and her style. I’d definitely buy a CD of hers. She’s actually my #2 pick, right behind Clay.

Trenyce needs to STOP with the ridiculous hand motions. What was with tracing the tracks of tears down her cheek? What’s up with her patting her cheek? Why is she like a damn pantomime?! Wasn’t some other contestant told not to do that because it looks stoopid? Shouldn’t that same advice apply to everyone? She’s a good singer – she’s another one who I thought was overrated but surprised me last night. I like her singing, for the most part. She’s just got to knock off the hand gestures.

Carmen – nice surprise there, too, but I don’t think she’s got what it takes to hold on to the very end and beat Clay, Vanessa, Ruben, Trenyce, or even Julia, who I think are the toprunners in this competition.

Kimberly Locke – oh my, what a shame. She sounded simply dreadful. As much as I loved Frenchie Davis in this competition, I thought Kim was actually the better singer between the 2 of them. (In their “Band of Gold” duet, Kim not only outsung Frenchie, but Frenchie didn’t even sing the right words (which others were criticized for by the judges, but she wasn’t!)) But even though I thought Kim sang better (at least in that number), I haven’t liked her attitude at all. Well last night she totally blew it. She’s been great at times and just so/so at times, but last night she just plain stunk.

Corey. Just go away. Ugh. You suck.

And poor, poor Charles. He’s a cute kid, but completely talentless. I think he’s gone tonight.

This week’s stars were Clay, Ruben, Vanessa and Trenyce.

Poor Charles. I agree, compared to most of the others, he had no business being on the show. And, yet, he seems so sweet, I feel bad. Kimberly Locke can only sing Over the Rainbow, I guess. They criticized that other girl, Aliceyn, for only singing one song over and over, but the same could be said of Kimberly. Last night she SUCKED. Ricky missed his cue and I felt like that damaged his performance, but it looks like only Mr. Caricci and I noticed that. I liked Josh until I saw Clay, Ruben and Trenyce. Those three were GREAT. I want to like Vanessa, but she did nothing for me last night. Kimberly Caldwell needs to stop acting as if she’s the boss of American Idol. All the rest: forgettable.

The camera angle didn’t allow me to see if Ricky was moving his lips at the beginning of the song. He was doing the hand motions for 1-2-3 at the right time in the song. I thought perhaps the microphone was turned off because suddenly the words picked up in mid-sentence.

I’m not crazy about Ricky. He gives me the heebie jeebies, but I’m willing to think that it was a problem with the mike.

I noticed it, and I thought it was cool that no one mentioned it.

To everyone who complains about Clay’s theatrical presence: have any of you people actually seen a pop concert?! These people are like tearing up and gesturing at the audience and reaching out and grasping at the air and looking like they’re just going to DIIIIIIIE without LOOOOOOVE…I really don’t understand why this is everyone’s beef with Clay. He’s adorable, he’s got a huge fan base and big EEEEEEEEE quality, and a fantastic voice to boot!

Yes, I love and am rooting for Clay. Why do you ask?

Seriously though, he and Ruben were the best of the night, by far. Kimberly Locke SUCKED, she didn’t even sound like the same person! I was shocked, she was one of my picks for the winner in the beginning. I don’t understand how that Corey guy has gotten as far as he has…everytime he opens his mouth I scramble for the Mute button. Everyone else was Meh. Vanessa’s good, but I’m getting a little burnt on her “LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT HOW CUTE I AM! AREN’T I QUIRKY AND WACKY AND JUST ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE?!” I liked her a lot at first, but she tries too hard.

Go Clay!!!

I was under the impression that it was the microphone, not Ricky. I guess my favorites in this competition are Kim C, Clay, Trenyce, and Vanessa, not necessarily in that order. I absolutely despise Corey and Julia both. I used to like Kim L, but last night she didn’t perform well. I think Corey or Charles will be the first to go.
