Are minorities in the US not into antiques and collecting old crap? Watched quite a few episodes of this programme and there rarely seems to be anyone on it who isn’t white and male. Granted most of the people they visit seem to be elderly too but it’s quite a uniform bunch of people. Does this accurately reflect the types of people who typically fill their sheds with old petrol station signs or what am I missing?
I keep waiting for them to meet Sanford & Son.
I do a lot of picking at garage sales, antique shops, flea markets, and estate sales… and the answer to this question is “Yes.”
Especially in the upper midwest where they do most of their filming (Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, etc).
Exactly. In this area, 99% of the people who own big sheds in rural areas are going to be old white guys.
If they were in the Southeast, they’d probably find old black guys with crap in their sheds, but in BFE Minnesota, it’s going to be Ole Oleson and his collection of tractor memorabilia.
Every episode I’ve seen they’ve been picking in the South though.
I just surfed through some PBS show, sort of a contest, where people buy various objects at flea markets and resell for profit. Of three contestants, one was black woman. AFAIK, these are people who do this at least on a part-time profit making basis.
Market Warriors, and I love that show. They use the same people every week, but the black lady is actually a new addition to the show - replacing one of the season one cast members. Her name is Bene Raia and she’s a professional auctioneer, and from Nigeria (her accent made me think Caribbean at first but I was way off).
