Is there a reliable list anywhere of American Communists who died in the Stalinist purges?
A friend claims that her great-aunt had actually married an American citizen back in the early days of the USSR. This individual was apprently purged and executed. With the great aunt long dead, none of the family can actually recall the name of the person. I am hoping that a list might be able to refresh their memory.
Well, they weren’t commies, and I don’t know if they were executed, but American pilots from the Vietnam War and Korean War are thought by some to have been shipped off to the USSR never to be seen again. Don’t know how reliable these sites are, just googled the particulars and picked a couple results.
Alexander Dolgun was an American who probably should have become one of Stalin’s victims. Against great odds, he survived 24 years in the Gulag and was released in 1972. His book is one of the best first-hand accounts of that place and time.
