America's Best are Liars

You know, the optical company with the owl mascot that claims you can get “two pair of glasses and a free eye exam for $69”?

Well, they lie. Plain straight up lie. Sure, you can pay $69 and get a free eye exam, and you get to pick two pair of $59 frames, so they have a decent selection there, but it’s the part about getting two pair of glasses that is just wrong. You see, for $69, you get two pair of frames and an eye exam - you have to pay additional money for the lenses. That’s right, if you actually want the glasses to help you see, you pay more. And lenses aren’t cheap.

The one around here is incompetent, too!

I made an appointment for the day before my wedding, they lost the appt. Okay, fine. A large part of my job is scheduling, and if when can go a year without messing someone’s appointment up, then I’ll have the right to be upset.

So I set a new appointment for the next weekend. Got there on time. Waited…and waited…and waited…after 45 minutes of being ignored, walked up to the counter and asked them to cancel my appointment.

Going to Target this weekend. I hear good things.

Go get an exam anywhere; have them measure your pupillary distance. Maybe you can even get them to do all of your glasses measurements and give them to you. Otherwise, you might be able to snag them off your current glasses.

Take the scrip and dash out of the store.

Go home and get on somewhere like zenni.com and order a pair of glasses for $25 including lenses.

Order 4 over the course of a few months, like I did. Nice spares or a change of look.

You can get the exam and 2 pairs of glasses with “single-vision, uncoated plastic lenses” for $69 - of course many people will need/want more expensive lenses, but they aren’t exactly lying (and really, what do you think you’re going to get for $69 including the exam?)

I don’t think that’s true. It seemed like any lenses were an additional cost.

Yes, it is true. I have bought 2 pairs of single vision glasses from them 5 or 6 times from them as part of $69 deal that included a very good eye exam. The salesperson tried to sell me all kinds of coatings and upgrades (ex - polycarbonate lenses) that I politely declined. I used them as back up glasses and simply went over to Zenni or Eyebuy Direct to order glasses with all the bells and whistles I wanted.

Owls are dirty, filthy, disgusting killing bastards. They’ll kill a dozen chickens in a single night, just to tear the head off and gorge on the crop. You expect them to be truthful?

Owl-ch!

Well, I’ve never used them - but since they heavily promote the deal and have 500+ locations in business with no apparent controversy I suspect you are mistaken.

(While I’m not an optometry expert, I’ve worn glasses most all my life, and think it might be possible that some prescriptions cannot be corrected using the “free” lenses - if they’re too strong, certainly if they are multifocal, etc.)

It’s true, within the limits described. Mine totalled $75 with tax.

Yes - Zenni is great! Now I have different color and different style frames to wear with different outfits. I wear progressive lenses and have never paid more than $55 total. Also, I get great prescription sunglasses from them. I’ve never had any issues with Zenni.

Owl say!

Yea well, pretty much everyone has done this after a few too many drinks.

Cut the Owl some slack. He has to be spokesman for Trip Advisor and that drug Xyzal, whatever the hell that does. And he has to use that one eye for the potato chips.

Thirding Zenni. AFAIC the only way to go, as long as you can wait a couple of weeks. For the same price as a single pair of glasses at LensCrafters or wherever you could get a pair of regular glasses, a backup pair, and a pair of prescription sunglasses, depending on the options you pick.

Slack Bullshit! Fucker’s murdered near a dozen chickens in the last 2 days!

(Actually, I hate the wife’s chickens. Go Owl!)
