AMsterdam - casinos, hotels and restaurants

Spreekt u Engels? (Do you speak English?)

Well no problem there, because I’ve never found anyone in The Netherlands who didn’t speak English.

I’m planning a trip to Amsterdam next year with my sister. (We’re both semi-retired.)
She likes:

  • comfortable, good value hotels
  • art
  • shows
  • good food
  • shopping

I like:

  • comfortable, good value hotels
  • Texas Hold’em (is it true that only one Casino chain is licensed in the Netherlands?)
  • shows
  • good food
  • chess

Your suggestions for any or all of the above would be most welcome!

P.S. I have been to Holland by ferry (that crazy North Sea ), train and plane. Which do you recommend? (We both live in the Midlands).

A great show. A must see in Amsterdam. Performed by Americans living in A’dam. http://www.boomchicago.nl/en/

There is a big casino very close to Leidseplein, which is where Boom Chicago is situated. There is also a large outdoor chess set next to the casino http://www.nickjenkins.net/travel/amsterdam/chess01.jpg

When I’m paying I stay in The IBIS which is about ~€70. The only other hotels I’ve stayed were paid by the company and cost a lot more.

There is a train connection that goes from the airport to the centre(about 5 mins walk from the IBIS I’ve stay at) leaves every 15mins and costs €3.60. If flights aren’t too expensive and if you book early they won’t be that’s the way I’d go.

This is better suited to IMHO than GQ.

It is true that there is only one (state owned) casino company in the netherlands. there are some other chains that offer machines though, but for actual card-in-hands (or roulette) you need to go to a Holland Casino. There are a few options for Texas Hold’em; you can play cash games where the house takes a percentage from each pot and you have mini tournaments. In this case you pay 10 euros and there are 9 people at a table and the full 90 euros is somehow divided by the first three. These games are very fast though, with short stacks and rapidly increasing blinds; i think they last about thirty minutes. Afterwards you can re-enlist and play again, but you usually have to wait a round (or two). This is why they can offer the tournaments for free; they expect you will gamble while waiting.

Thanks for the replies.

Any more information is welcome…

Is thr “Five Flies” Restaurant any good? I always was intrigued by the name.
