An Ancient Town in Laos Grapples with Modernity

Story here. The old royal capital of Luang Prabang.

I’m glad we saw it years ago before it became too spoiled. Back then, we stayed upstairs in an old Sino-Portuguese mansion formerly occupied by a French merchant, converted into a hotel. Right on the Mekong. We had a lovely view of the river, and the town was rather peaceful. We certainly never saw anything like what’s depicted in the photograph that goes with the linked story above. :frowning:
