Thinking about the current (and several past) threads about legitimate uses for socks (alternative user accounts), it occurred to me that maybe an anonymous forum would be something to consider.
There would have to be certain rules that I have no idea whether they are practicable, to prevent it from being an in-house snarkpit, of course.
Say you are still logged on to your regular account, just that the name doesn’t show. Admins and mods would still be able to see who you are, of course, so that might limit its uses for some people in some cases. This would allow them to enforce whatever rules this forum had.
It doesn’t have to be a BBQ Pit but wilder. I am thinking a forum with regular rules, where anonymity just allows you to ask about that 4-inch zit on your back without your doper coworkers knowing.
How much people would share knowing that the mods still know who they are, and how much effort they want to put into concealing their posting style from being recognizable would be a matter of choice for each user, of course.
Anyways, as I said, I have no idea if this is something that the current software allows, but just something I thought could be discussed.
As an alternative, there could be a single user account that is only available to the mods. Call it something distinctive like “Socko McSockity”. Anybody that wants to post a legit question that would be embarrassing if tied to their own user account could email the question to a mod. The mods could then screen the questions, and post those deemed worthy under the special account. Maybe make it a weekly feature…the anal warts thread of the week or something…
