An Easy Question for PS4 Owners

IMO you definitely want a 1 TB version. And yes all games install on the HD but one of the really nice things about this generation is that you can go to the web version of the PSN store, purchase a digital game and click “download to my ps4” and it will start to download and install in the background on your system even if it was in rest mode. So I can purchase a game at work and it’s installed including latest patches when I get home.

You can also download updates, patches and games in the background while playing a game or watching Netflix.

But all I’m seeing right now that has a 1TB hard drive is the Pro.

Unless I’m googling wrong, it’s only the UK systems that have that large of a hard drive in the regular system. And the fact that the Pro is so expensive is what’s turning me off to the whole thing in the first place

There’s nothing like that little box popping up in the corner saying “blahblah update installed”. I’m terrible at updating anything that’s not security related, so I often ended up waiting precious minutes and whatnot waiting for new required updates before I could play my favoritist game in the whole world (this week). The fact that the PS4 updates it all for me, without interrupting what I’m doing at the time? Magical.

CNET just had this article today:

How to add more storage to your PlayStation 4

The article highlights that you can add either an external (up to 8TB) or internal (up to 3TB) harddrive.

Thats really odd, the 1 TB slim is also available in my region (Asia), no idea why they’re not making it available in the US. So I guess now that Firmware 4.5 is out it doesn’t matter so much, you can connect an external and install games on that.

500GB should let you have 3 or so AAA titles and a bunch of indie games installed at one time anyway.

It was added in firmware 4.50 which came out this week, I think.

Consider stuffing an SSD in there. I had a 512GB lying around after my last computer upgrade. Cut most of my loading times by about 25%.

Came out yesterday to be precise… It’s a pretty major update, lots of good new stuff added.

(That post doesn’t mention “boost mode” which lets a PS4Pro run games at higher frame rates even on unpatched games… But it’s there, downloaded and confirmed it last night).

I’m not 100% sure but I believe you want to use an external drive over upgrading the internal one, just purely due to the higher bandwidth of USB3 over SATA II that the internal drive uses.

I would also recommend the Hybrid drives for consoles where you get the most bang for your buck in terms of storage space and read speeds.

A console is just not going to take full advantage of an SSD the way a PC does. So you’re spending a lot more money per GB but only seeing a minor improvement over a hybrid drive.

This works for me because I’m a horrible human being and will not have a single indie game on my system I can almost guarantee it.

MAYBE I’ll get one if the hype around it is super massive, but otherwise I’ll just stick to my regular games.

Entirely up to you of course but if you have a PS+ subscription you get some free games every month some of which are indie gems. And for couch co-op or split screen local multiplayer must haves are Rocket League, Towerfall Ascension and Overcooked.
