An EASY Superman Question

My question was inspired by this thread.

But, I really, really, do have a much simpler question for you comics gurus. I am speaking of Superman comics from oh, around 1962 to 1967 or so.

In the dialog balloons, every time (as I remember), when anyone said Superman, the name was always bolded.

Did this indicate that (to exaggerate for clairty) every time someone said the word, they emphasize it…Look, it’s SUPERMAN!!!

Did no one ever just say something like “I wish I was Superman” ? Did they always say something like “I wish I was SUPERMAN!” ?

Just wondering, does anyone have a take on why his name was always bolded and how we should have read it? I never could quite get my mind around this convention.

either indicating reverence, or it’s a copywrite thing.

I imagine it was an editorial decision. It was probably supposed to be a relatively subtle emphasis on the title character’s name.

I noticed during my comic-reading days that random words were bolded much of the time. I’ve never quite gotten why.
