An eclipse question. No, not that one. April 2024

I was looking up eclipses, because reasons.

There’s one in April 2024 that, if not for the fall of night, would reach the UK:

Watching the video animation of the path of this eclipse, it really does look like it should hit the UK at dusk. In practice, does this mean we should observe an abrupt transition from dusk to night on that day?

Actually, the eclipse totality path is headed to France at the end. But no, what will happen is that you won’t really notice anything at all in England. Wales, Cornwall, Scotland, and some of Northumberland will experience about 0 - 10% of an eclipse as the sun reaches sunset, but that’s not enough to matter.

It looks like the 10-40% zone is the part that theoretically extends across twilight.

So we might get an interesting sunset (assuming it’s not pissing with rain)

Totality for that one is going right over Niagara Falls! Imagine the honeymoon pictures!
