I think I’ll tell the story about how I got pulled over for an unusual reason.
OK so here’s the scene; I lived in a not-so-nice neighborhood, in an apartment complex with all kinds of ne’er-do-wells. There had also been a rash of break-ins in cars lately. I had just built a new PC, and needed to find someone with a windows disc so I could get it up and running. My friend across town said he had one, and I gleefully put my black duster and black hat on and ran out into the night. The fastest way to the van was behind the apartment buildings which was also kinda dark. I run across the street past some lady unloading her kids from her car, and as I’m trying to unlock the van some jackass tears down the road and I hug the van to keep from getting smushed. I jump in the van, and haul ass down the street in my excitement.
I get about 5 miles away when I notice a cop behind me. Like RIGHT behind me. Fuck! OK be cool, be cool… I see the 40 MPH sign and I make sure I’m actually at that speed. He followed me for like 20 blocks, which made me kinda nervous. He hits the lights as I pass by another 40 MPH, and I was actually going 40 so I thought “Well this’ll be interesting”. I pull into an empty parking lot, then another cop car pulls in in front of me. Well shit. Two cop cars = someone’s getting arrested. I sit there with my hands on the wheel, windows rolled down. As the cop walks up he’s shining his flashlight all in the windows, at the floor and the steering column. Officer Smiles (he grinned like a loon the entire exchange) asked if I knew why he pulled me over. I said “I honestly have no idea. I wasn’t speeding, and I thought I was obeying the traffic laws”. He asked for my license and registration, took it back to the cruiser, then came right back and handed them back.
He said that a van with my plates had been reported stolen about 20 minutes ago by someone matching my description. This was a great surprise to me, as I was the actual owner of the van! I said “Why would I report my own van stolen if I’m driving it?” Then I just started laughing and laughing as I figured it out. I told him what likely happened, he gave me his card and said if I got any grief about the incident to let him know. Then he went over to the other cop to tell him what happened
So here’s what happened. The aforementioned lady-and-her-kids saw a young guy in a black trenchcoat and hat run from the shadows up to the driverside of a van, do motions like he was trying to use a slim jim on the door(you have to stand really close to the door and pull up) get in and haul ass out of there. I wish I knew who’d called the police on me, I was highly amused
Anyways, to relate to the thread, if I’d been a jackass about being pulled over for no reason they could have detained me until they figured out there wasn’t any crime involved.
