what do you think of adding a “guestbook” in each members profile home page? so whenever you check out a profile of someone you could leave them a friendly message, without having to reach all the way out to using someones email (which typically is used for something of importance).
they’d be nice places to store inside jokes, strengthening the community
Sounds very similar to the Private Messaging feature of the software. Which is currently (and rightly) disabled by the admins for a variety of reasons.
“Guestbook” is a function of at least the most recent upgrades of VBB; I’ve seen it instantiated on a couple of VBB-based boards. But IMO it’s not a particularly valuable one. I suspect Jerry left it out intentionally if it was even included in the most recent upgrade (I’m not sure when JelSoft instituted it). If the Reader/SDMB management were going to turn on any of the “luxury” bandwidth-burners, Private Messaging would be my choice. But I’m far happier with a board that stays up and responds at moderate speed, than one that takes ten minutes to fail to load, but if it did would give me avatars, icons, graphic signatures, and the weather outside Aunt Tillie’s outhouse.
We’re several upgrades behind at present. I know of no plans to upgrade, though sometimes Jerry surprises us.
Not sure what’s going on with Jelsoft right now, but there’s usually a fairly solid upgrade and a beta version in test most of the time. We’re very conservative in our approach to upgrades and we don’t mess with beta installs as a general rule, so we tend to come late to any new function parties.
Now, TD, don’t be so hard upon yourselves. Just because your last function party was at Conjunction Junction…
