I think this is the first time I’ve dreamed about a Doper:
I was at… some sort of event. (Sponsored by a religious organization, no less). Terry Pratchett was there, with an advance copy of Unseen Academicals on hand.
He let me leaf through the book, and I was surprised to see that it was dedicated to Quasimodem (and Dopers in general). He went on for a few lines, calling him Quasi at one point and putting his name in the proper username bold.
The book itself was a tall thin paperback, with illustrations. It was more of a philosophical discussion than a story with a plot, but since it was Pratchett I loved it anyway.
I asked Terry if I could be in the dedication, too, and he said sure, just email him my username.
Interesting Discworld “facts” I learned: The Colour of Magic was written with some co-author or other; they fought about the plot line, and stopped speaking to each other for twenty-two years before trying again; and the main character was supposed to be just about anyone except Rincewind, who was supposed to die at the end. They even considered Rincewind’s mother at one point. Fortunately for fans, they ended up discarding or killing off the other options, and were stuck with Rincewind out of necessity.
One more thing I remember: as I said in the first paragraph, this whole event was was organized by a religious Jewish organization. Someone was giving a talk on the meaning of life, and Pterry was sitting in the audience. I looked at him and wondered why exactly they had invited an atheist to be a keynote speaker at a religious event, and what he was thinking of the whole speech.
