I would like to invest in a quality task chair (for example the Aeron, but probably not). For working at the computer, I like to have adjustable arms, but I would also like to be able to play guitar using the chair and for that purpose the arms get in the way. Are there any chairs where the arms swing out of the way easily, or can be easily removed?
Don’t have an answer for you, but I’m also interested in such a chair for the same purposes. A couple years ago I bought a nice manager chair for my little home recording studio/office in the basement. After a few months I had to give it to my wife and sit in a “standard” chair because the arms kept getting in the way of the guitar or bass. Ideally, ethelbert, I think our chair should have arms that are not removed, but easily moved in and out of position. I can think of situations where it would be convenient to have both (such as when recording).
Apparently these have removable armsat a cost of $400 each. (Umm, the chairs, not the arms).
That said, I have a Pick-N-Glider and love it. I did reupholster it as I’m not into Southwestern prints, in fact, I should do that again.
In the category of chair you’re talking about I can tell you that the arms on the Leap don’t go down very far; not good at all for guitar. The arms on the Freedom chair go down to almost the level of the seat but not quite enough to be totally out of the way when holding an acoustic guitar.
The Freedom is Ok when I’m picking through pdfs on the web to try them out and is my favorite computer chair overall, but the position of the guitar is definitely not ideal.
The arms on these two chairs are not easily removable.
I have considered the Pick-n-Glider, but I don’t really have the room for a dedicated guitar chair. Basically I have been using a well made armless dining room chair and I am happy with that, but since I am buying a new office chair I thought I would try and get a good chair that fits both purposes. I think that Simmerdown is probably right removable is not enough, it would need to easily swing out of the way.
My experience is that the easier it is to play my guitar, the more I play. The more I play, the happier I am.
As an owner, I can confirm that the arms on the Aeron chair are removable. They slid up and down on a track to adjust height, but the track is open at the bottom so that they slip out if you want them to. The arms also rotate in and out, but I’m not sure if they’d be wide enough for your needs; removing them would be the safe bet.
Can you tell me how easy it is to do that? Do I need a screwdriver?
The link, shmark, shows some lovely leather-ish looking office chairs, none of which appear to have movable arms.
I did not see too many possibilities in that link. What did you buy?
I can’t vouch for how well this works or how comfortable it is, but you might want to check out this chair. Choose the “Height Adjustable and Rollback Function” arm, which you can see in the side view. If you look at this link - the 6th arm down, it shows a drawing of how the arm can rotate backwards.
I used to be in the same dilemma…I used to record music at my desktop computer and wound up using an armless chair. Nowadays I have a laptop so I’m not really in the market for this type of solution anymore.
Amazon has one that will work :Amazon.com: Modway Edge Mesh Back and White Vinyl Seat Office Chair With Flip-Up Arms - Computer Desks in Black : Home & Kitchen
That’s pretty good. I think flip-down arms would facilitate more natural movements, but otherwise the closest one so-far, IMHO.
That one looks very interesting, especially the price. One of the reviewers even mentions playing guitar. Thanks, mattspop.
