Well, I looked it up. Apparently, students between 15 and 18 don’t have to take the driving test if they have some type of certificate stating they completed the class.
Bizarre.
(Or is it just me who finds this odd?)

Which is precisely why you should go see a career counselor. You could take some aptitude tests and find out what your strengths are and what you are interetsed in.
Working retail is a dead-end job, trust me. I spent many years in retail. It leads nowhere and can be incredibly boring and frustrating.
My SIL has worked at K-Mart for almost 20 years and is now being forced out of her job due to their bankruptcy. She also doesn’t want to go back to school and is looking at other retail jobs, and she’s 43.
Is that where you want to be in 20 years?
Sorry if I sound like your mom, but retail sucks. It’s a nowhere job.
Well,Bibliocat–how does that old song go? “He’s a real nowhere Man,sittin’ in his Nowhere Land, making plans for Nobody.”
I don’t see retail as a dead end job if I can just get a leg up and make it to mgmt. Yes,at times retail does suck, I’ll gladly admit to that. You may dislike retail as a profession but SOMEBODY"S got to do it or else we’d never be able to buy anything…all the stores would be closed because nobody would be working there.shrugsRetail is an option and it’s one I"ll take over anything else right now because I don’t have much of a choice.Besides…gutter girls like me don’t belong in no office.shrug
Missy2U–I think that’s how it is in Texas because nobody I know who is my age or close to it (late 20’s-mid to late 30’s) ever had to take the driving portion of the test.We just had to prove we completed either a HS driver’s ed course or driver’s ed from an accredited driving school like Metro or Sears.

So the way to show your, er, love for your mother is to keep her in the dark about how you really feel, and complain about her behind her back? This type of family dynamic must be a therapist’s dream.
Won’t you teach me how I, too, can get such a healthy relationship with both my mother and my son? Please? Coming from a family where things are out in the open unapologetically, even if it sometimes leads to refreshingly air-clearing scenes, I am really curious about what it must be like to be in such dire need of an enema. Ever watch the Osbournes? If not, you should. You might learn something. No need to thank me for the advice. That’s what I’m here for.
First, I fall into the age category you mention, and I went to driver’s ed class in Texas, and I still had to take my driver’s test.
Second, education will help you a LOT more than you realize, even if all you aspire to be is a retail person. Go to the local community college and take classes in management, merchandising, public speaking (don’t laugh; being able to speak effectively goes a long way in the business world), and business. This can make the difference between being some anonymous retailer’s minimum-wage bitch and being a manager. And it’s entirely possible that, along the way, you’ll find something you’ll like even more and explore that option. But, honestly, honey, without at least some education, all you can expect is minimum wage, no job stability, and lousy treatment.

IDBB, first of all, I’m glad you found a job. Hopefully, this will postpone your having to sit and rot and be assfucked in jail.
However, for your own sake I really hope you take some of the advice in this thread. Take responsibility for yourself and your life. Find something you want to do. Own your problems. You don’t have to come up with an excuse for every bad thing that’s ever happened so that people know it’s not your fault. At the start of this thread, you could have just as easily answered the temping question with “For me, temping is not worth the money. Thanks for the advice, but I’m not going to do it.” You have the right to not temp. You don’t have to diverge into explanations of bad driving instructors and reasons not to go back to college and rumors of temping not working anyway to justify your decision. At the same time, it’s worth keeping an open mind when people present alternative viewpoints about things you’d already formed an opinion on.
Your life should be the result of your decisions, not your passive reactions to whatever randomly happens.
Even an Adult Education class would help. Those are the ones they offer at night at the local high school for something like $25.00 or so.

In retail, the difference between being a minimum-wage lackey and being a manager is experience, and the fact that the manager is paid a salary. That sounds really good at first, but then you realize that the manager works 60-70 hours a week (or more), and has a key to the store. Wowee. They end up making only a little bit more than the minimum-wage lackeys they’re supervising, when you average out how much they make per hour, at 60-70 hours a week.
Yes, I know somebody has to do it, but it sounds like you are not happy with retail. If you are not happy, it will show in your work and when you are with customers. It takes a certain kind of person to work in retail. If you hate it, and hate working with the public, it will show when you are waiting on people.
You said you “truly loathed” worked at Godiva. I can imagine why. It’s probably full of wealthy women buying over-priced chocolates who expect you to jump through hoops for them, right? They probably take it out on you when the store’s out of Chocolate Almond Truffles or Peppermint Cocoa Beans.
“Oh yeah, it’s all IDBB’s fault. I’ll bitch at her because she just works here! She can make them magically appear if I bitch and moan enough! I know there’s more in The Back! Go look in The Back!”
I worked at a snooty jewelry store for a while with rich-bitch customers all day who thought I was there to kiss their ass. It sucked. They wanted huge discounts, they wanted stuff fixed for free years after they bought it, they wanted stuff fixed instantly; it was ridiculous…don’t get me started.
IDBB?? Can I get really just “plain talkin’” with you? I mean the following in a totally supportive way.
Look, sweetie! Based on this and many of your other posts. It looks like you are really, really down on yourself. It doesn’t sound as if you believe in yourself much. IMHO, that is the reason for many of the “less logical” aspects of your rants.
You have something you feel strongly about, you post a rant, but then, it kind of unravels. Leaving you feeling unsure, and no doubt attacked by people who get impatient with this pattern in you.
I sense that at heart, you’re an intelligent young lady, with a hell of a lot going for her. But it doesn’t sound as if you’ve…
a.) got very much self-esteem.
b.) understand a whole lot about how the “big picture” works
c.) have a mix of naivete’ and cynicism that does you no good whatsoever
d.) a bit set in your “ideas” as the gospel truth.
HS is a sucky time for many people. However, this does not mean that education has to be like that. And let me tell you, even if you are in love with retail (and are you really? I heard you mention animals, wouldn’t you rather be a vet?), you will still need education in order to reach the higher echelons.
It sounds as if you are just now starting to realize some stuff about life, but maybe aren’t “brave” enough, or are too cynical to take chances. Hey! That’s not how the Goths I know view it.
Damn the Torpedoes!!! Full speed ahead Girl!! Don’t chicken out because of your own preconcieved notions of “how things are”.
How will you know unless you try?
Actually we don’t get this as much at our store as they do at the ultra-snooty(and quickly going downhill)Shops at Willowbend in Plano.Anyone who’s ever visited that mall can back me up on that. All the stores there are very high end clothing, jewelry, etc.and that’s where all the snooty women shop. What we mostly get at our mall is a bunch of idiot teenagers who think everything is there for their amusement and that they can sample ANYTHING that they see fit, even going so far as to steal freshly dipped chocolate strawberries out of the window when there is a BIG sign with the price right on it next to them.Hello? Can’t these people READ?
Ugh.
