Anal about alarm clocks?

My alarm clock has the reverse-thingie, so that’s not much of an issue, though I have been known to leave it at 6:32 because I was too tired to mess with it.

However, I always check the AM/PM indicator on my alarm setting three times or so. I’ve slept late exactly once because I’d set the alarm for 6:30 PM, and it was traumatic, to say the least.

I am trying to get into the habit of getting up the first time I really wake up in the morning. I’ve noticed that when I go back to sleep in the morning, I fall into a troubled sleep filled with unpleasant dreams, and when the alarm wakes me up I feel like my brains have been replaced with clammy oatmeal and have a hard time getting out of bed. I’m not a morning person, so getting up when I first wake up usually isn’t really a picnic, either, but it’s better.

I had a friend in college who was so anal she would set her alarm clock to make an equation. For example, 5:32am was OK because 5 = 3 + 2.

She was an applied math major.

Hey I can see how that works - I actually like setting my alarm for 6.33 or 7.14 rather than the rigid five minute interval thing. It’s also kinda cool if when you’ve finished setting it you see that you’ve matched the minutes to the actual time just by chance - so you’re setting the alarm for 6.44 and when you switch back to the clock mode you see it’s 23.44

Now remember to switch the light back on & check you’ve set it correctly at least twice before falling asleep !

The alarm is currently set for 0729… but it’s ten minutes fast… and I didn’t have to be in to work until 1500 on swings.

The 0730-ish alarm setting is for ShadiRoxan’s benefit, not mine.

Yes, I did hit snooze every 9 minutes for 6 or 7 hours. Truly wonderful dreams.

I also have one of those alarm clocks that doesn’t allow you to reverse. If I miss it and set the alarm for 6:31, I usually set the actual time ahead by one minute. Much easier initially but then eventually I get pushed ahead so many minutes that I end up resetting the time because my clock is like 17 minutes fast which is too much math for me in the morning.

Powers

A. I go back around if I overshoot. I won’t even be able to fall asleep if I lie there knowing it’s set a minute late.

A. I hit the snooze button. I’m rarely ready to go the moment the alarm goes off.

I’m usually rather anal about it and will set it for either a number ending in 0 or 5. However, when I was in high school and getting five or less hours of sleep a night, I would set my alarm for 6:51, as I needed to get up at seven, but wanted to be able to hit the snooze button once.

Now, however, I have the tendecy to hit the snooze button multiple times. My roommate finds this amusing, as does my boyfriend, who asked me this morning when I got out of bed an hour after the alarm went off if I’m always this lazy. To which I replied, yes, but normally I set my alarm an hour earlier.

I go all the way around to 6:30.

I’ve never used the snooze button. In fact, I usually set my alarm for half an hour to an hour before I actually need to so that I have more time to get ready. I’d rather get up earlier and not have to rush.

      • Mine has a high-speed-forwards, button, a one-minute-forwards button and a one-minute-reverse button, , , -so setting it back a few minutes is no problem.
  • I also will tend to wake up at very-nearly the same time if the alarm clock is there or not. Such as, if the volume knob got hit by something and turned all the way down, the clock “pops” when the alarm circuit that should play the radio goes off-but no music plays. But I am usually awake to hear the pop, and so then I know what has happened.
  • This thread reminds me that I have wanted one of those Zen alarm clocks for like forever, now. They are battery-powered though, I might have to rig different power tho’, some rechargeable batteries and solar panels maybe. I don’t think wall adaptors go that light…
