Analog Coax to HDMI

Here’s the setup…This summer I’m staying at a place that has free analog cable with a coax lead coming out of the wall.

What I want to do is to get the TV signal to my flatscreen monitor which has an HDMI connection.

Is there such a device that would convert this analog signal from it’s coax source to an HDMI input and would also allow me to tune the channels? (I understand that I won’t get Hi-Def) Thanks in advance.

Will you have a computer?
If so, you can use something like this.

Such a device is available - it is called an HDTV tuner - some will also tune NTSC analog which is what is on your ‘free’ analog cable. I’d make sure that the signal really is analog - many cable systems went all digital recently and the free channels are actually digital QAM signals.

Finding a tuner that does not require a PC might be hard. I’d start here.

It would be far cheaper to find an old analog TV for the summer… Even if the free signal is digital QAM, the converter for an old TV might be free.

Man, the prices on stuff like this have dropped dramatically in the last few years:

$63. No HDMI though. If you look at the “frequently bought together” section you’ll see a $2.30 DVI to HDMI adapter.

eta: You’ll have to figure out audio on your own. If your monitor has speakers built in, you can get this:

If not, just wire the box directly to whatever you plan to use for sound.
