Analog modem problems

I’m trying to get a Creative Labs Modem Blaster V.92 DE5671 to connect to RoadRunner’s dial-up access (I want to have bare minimum Internet access backup for when cable goes out). It’s a USB modem, the motherboard is an ASUS M2N4-SLI and the CPU is an AMD Athlon 64x2 4800. The motherboard has onboard LAN, which I need to keep connected for access to the file server, other machines, etc. The connection was created via Windows XP’s new connection wizard (with settings confirmed by RR tech support).

When I try to connect my machine either freezes or restarts. This can happen before or during the handshake, but I’ve never established a connection. No key combination will unfreeze it, nor will trying to wait it out — only hitting reset helps. The restarts aren’t BSODs, they are complete reboots through POST and everything. I have tried with Zone Alarm and everything else shut off, and with no other running applications and many background processes terminated.

I haven’t used an analog modem since the early to mid nineties, so forgive me if I’m overlooking something basic. I’m hoping it’s something simple, like having an onboard LAN requires disabling it in BIOS before using the modem (but then how do I reach the file server?) or connections have to be tied together somehow. Or maybe something specific to Creative?

Any idea how to start troubleshooting?

Thanks,
