Funcom is offering a freebie trial of Anarchy Online, but they want a credit card number to try it. With a history like AO, I’m naturally reluctant on giving a CC for it. I’ve already downloaded a 592MB demo (thank the internet gods for cablemodems), but with initial reviews including phrases like “unplayable crap”, and such; I’m looking for opinions of real people who don’t have financial connections to the gaming industry.
Don’t give them your CC #. I played for the first month, I had it signed up for 1 month. Canceled after about 2 weeks, got a bill on my CC for 2 months playtime instead of one. I just let it go because it isn’t worth the hassle for $10.
Besides that the game itself is awful. Boring after a bit of watching fancy graphics. Nothing to really do after a while, bad lag, hard to handle FPS, etc. If you’re a fan of RPG’s, AC2 is coming, and DAoC is “starting” to get a bit better. If you like FPS*, pick up half-life for $20 and go start downloading some mods. They are great, I’ve been playing Half-Life for 5 years, never get bored because there is so much selection. (Try www.dayofdefeatmod.com]Day of Defeat 2.0 it’s a GREAT WW2 Mod) You can get some other mods at http://www.planethalflife.com
[hijack] The problems endemic to AOL are hardly due to them practicing any form of anarchy! More like “Incompetency Online” or “Bureaucratic Balkanization Without Strategic Vision Online”.

I’m in the process of trying to wean my girlfriend from it, because she’s had to reinstall AOL 7 something like 9 times, on two different computers / two different operating systems (98/XP Pro). She’s also tired of not being able to do a meaningful search-and-find on her email archives; she’s already stopped using the AOL browser and has switched to IE because AOL is slow, partially incompatible with the site she’s working on, and you can’t do simple things like right-click a link to open it in a new window.
The only remaining step is to convert her to Eudora and a new email address, and move all her bookmarks and archived AOL email over.
(Speaking of which, anyone got a tool to recommend for batch-importing of old AOL mail from someone’s “Organize” folder?)
Friends who play it claim that the bugs have been worked out to a great extent and that the lag issue is much improved. However, I gather that grouping is difficult, finding your way around when you’ve been given a mission is tough, and that the interface is imposing at first. There’s an online manual that I guess is recommended you check out, as well as some kind of helper-bots in newbie areas.
