My own Thai wife and I are well on our way to that. (Except hopefully not for the brain-cancer-at-61 part, plus I don’t live in Boise. And my name’s not Doug. Nor is my wife’s Kathy. Otherwise, it could be us someday.)

I have that book, which is, as the title suggests, a collection of letters between bargirls and their sponsors. The book is a fascinating read.
Because the term also means “stranger” and in some contexts “enemy”, which is not uncommon in many cultures.
