When I read articles about prominent figures from the time of the Roman Empire it seems to me that many modern day Italians must have prominent figures from that era in their family trees.
Is it possible to trace modern surnames back to a Latin equivalent? Do some modern Italians claim to be descended from Patrician families? Even from particular individuals?
See this ongoing thread: Is Julius Caesar’s Bloodline Traceable to the Present Day?
I doubt it and I’m Italian myself. The flux and violence of the Dark Ages had a tendency to blur and obscure, if not eradicate, most of the knowledge people had about their ancestors. Most family lineages recognized in Europe today go back to the Middle Ages at best.
Thanks guys, I had no idea there was a similar thread on here; it didn’t show up on my initial search. So the answer seems to be a definite NO, it seems a shame somehow.
Eh, once the Moors moved in there, they changed the whole country.
Would this also be on the same level as descendants of Charlemagne, which given how long ago he lived has essentially sired all of present-day Europe?
Since a thread on a similar topic is still active, I’m going to close this one as redundant.
